As part of our Chanukah campaign, Eight Nights. Eight Leaders. One Community., we honor Rabbi Elye Gross obm, whose leadership helped shape the CHJCC in its formative years, guided by care for people, quiet strength, and devotion to Crown Heights.

Rabbi Elye Gross obm, served as a director of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council in the 1970s and 80s, a formative era in our neighborhood’s history.

Rabbi Gross stood at the center of community affairs during years of rapid change and rising challenges. He represented Crown Heights with clarity and strength — speaking to officials, engaging with the media, and ensuring our community’s interests were understood and protected.

Throughout his tenure, he helped shape the early foundation of the CHJCC’s social-service work: supporting families with housing needs, guiding immigrants, assisting vulnerable residents, and strengthening the neighborhood’s civic voice.

He was deeply devoted to the wellbeing of Crown Heights — steady, principled, and unwavering in his commitment to protect and uplift the community he served.
