SUNY Downstate Hospital In Crown Heights To Undergo $1 Billion Revitalization Under New State-Backed Plan
Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a $1 billion reinvestment plan to modernize SUNY Downstate Hospital at 445 Lenox Road in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. Submitted by the Downstate Community Advisory Board (DCAB), the proposal outlines a sweeping renovation and infrastructure overhaul intended to preserve and enhance inpatient and outpatient services at the longstanding academic medical center. It is supported by the State University of New York (SUNY) system and includes input from local stakeholders, medical professionals, and community leaders.
Key elements of the proposal include converting all double-occupancy rooms to private rooms with showers, increasing capacity to 225 operational beds. The emergency department will be expanded to 45 treatment stations, and specialty units in cardiology, oncology, and orthopedics will be renovated. Additionally, the plan calls for the construction of a new hospital annex that will house an ambulatory surgery center and expanded outpatient services. The project will also address infrastructure issues affecting the facility’s mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
