Ticket Blitz in Crown Heights Leaves Residents Fuming

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Ticket blitzing in Crown Heights isn’t unfamiliar, though this time it’s the timing that has resident up in arms.

With the International Conference of Shluchim underway in Crown Heights, police have added lots of extra patrols, both by foot and by car, with the addition of car 1733, also known as the ticket car.

Residents said that they had not seen the car in Crown Heights in more then a month, but this Friday the car was sitting on Montgomery Street off Kingston Avenue waiting for motorists with out their seat belts on or talking on their cell phone.

One resident told CrownHeights.info ‘the timing couldn’t be more convenient, the car has been on Utica, Rogers, Nostrand and Franklin, but when guests come to Crown Heights, they [police] really know how to put a good kink in it all’ another resident added ‘in addition to it all its on a Friday that they do this to us, when Shabbos comes in a lot earlier no less’.

So on a practical note, motorists take extra care with putting on your seatbelts before putting your car into drive and do not use your cell phone without the use of a hands free device, as these two laws are in place to protect you as a motorist as well as other motorists and pedestrians around you.

  • Get The REAL Criminals

The murders, thiefs, rapists, and muggers the police dont care about. But if Chas Vesholom you drive without a bluetooth or seatbelt then, you are worse than a murderer. Then theyll get you. Or is it because they are lazy and its easier to pull someone over than to go after the real criminals.

Now now before you start commenting about seatbelts and cellphones, dont get me wrong. It is illegal AND dangerous to drive while on the cell phone and without a setabelt. no question.

But the quetion is, are the cops pulling us over because they ‘care’? or is this just a way to increase revenue for the city.

Look, when they ticket you, they make money. But when they put a murderer in jail it costs THEM lots of money (or us, the taxpayers).

Either way i hope my point is made well…

Lubavitchers are notoriously poor drivers. What’s more, seat belt and cell phone laws are disregarded with impunity.

I am sick and tired of Lubavitchers speeding, taking up 1 1/2 extra lanes when they double park, and making lazy gliding stops when they reach a STOP sign.

No excuses! The NYPD should be sending a message: drive right or give it up!

  • Joe

The police force’s motivation may be to make more money but, as you mentioned, those two laws bifrat are meant for our ssafety. It is poshut sakonas nefoshos to disregard them!

I received a ticket LAST YEAR the Friday of the kinus. Yes, they were waiting for me on Montgomery and Kingston – There is no doubt they are here to HURT us (monetarily)- Don’t be so forgiving by explaining they are here to protect us. This blitz is absolutely blatantly clear, they know we are all rushing about this BIG weekend and are out to catch us NOT PROTECT us. I am not your typical kid always blaming cops when they ticket a speedster – I am way past that stage- but this blitz during every KINUS is way too obvious. My drive for one block from Montgomery to Crown at a snails pace is not endangering anyone or anything! So please don’t explain this away by excusing them as our protectors. I fought the ticket and won! I postponed the first appointment and they postponed the second – I finally went for the third scheduled appointment and beat the ticket and it made my day!! I used to view the men in blue as the good guys and our protectors and am sorry to say I no longer do.

know one cares. people in the hood are busy sucking up for there personal gain. heshys right. but saying lubivtcher only. get a life.the truth is i should get a life myself for puting a comment

  • NYPD RULES

I like these comments. The NYPD has people looking for robbers, murderers… But it also has a force to prevent ACCIDENTS which result in DEATH simple. DRIVE SAFELY AND YOU WON’T GET PULLED OVER!!! what is so outrageous about the nypd doing it’s job better. And YES friday because that is the day people are most CARELESS…

I got a ticket in crown heights while using my HANDS-FREE DEVICE but out of habit I was clicking the volume on my cell phone that was in my hand. At no time did I hold the phone to my ear and speak… but I still got a ticket for speaking on a cell phone while driving, even after showing the officer what happened… So be aware that the police are really on the lookout. and if anyone knows how to fight such a ticket (if it’s at all possible) please let me know

  • Here we go again

once again this year on labor day, all the "visitors" to this neighborhood were parked by pumps, double parked, parked in alleyways, and any other possible illegal place possible. Did anyone see a single ticket on a single car that day? Because I certainly didn’t. The 77th precinct are biased and anti-semitic. They pick and choose which holiday they wish to target. Anyone else remember Purim 2 years ago.

Oh, and to Heshy, get a life, sick of the way Lubavitcher drive? New yorkers as a whole drive like crazy. Do you have any idea how many drivers I see speeding past school buses in the morning when they have their stop signs out and flashing lights… and I have a newsflash for you. 9 out of 10 of those drivers are NOT Lubavitchers, they are people similar to those "visitors" I was mentioning earlier.

Finally, to any of those who are thinking this, No I am not racist! It’s just if the NYPD are going to be so self righteous and give Lubavitchers tickets to "protect" our safety, then they should do it on labor day as well, and all other times, they should not pick and choose.

  • dont speak while driving

I once got a ticket while speaking on my cell phone. As soon as I realized a cop saw me I hung up and told him I was checking a missed call. He gave me a ticket anyway. I went to fight it with the same story and to my surprise I got off. So to frustrated driver, definately go fight it. You will probably get off too. Plus if the cop is there he will admit what you said to him. They write down everything.

    To NYPD RULES
I quess when I see police officers from the 71st
driving down empire blvd with the cell phone in their hand against his or her face while driving thats OK. I’m sure when your in the academy besides teaching you how to throw your gloves off at graduation they must have a class in how to drive while on the cell phone that keeps all of us safe . I agree that laws need to be enforced but lets start with NYPD before you come after the citzens who pay your salary.Maybe 90 days without pay for any officer who uses a cell phone while driving on duty will get your attention ,with a quota to the sargents of at least 2 officers per month. Remember you work for us!!!!!!!!!!!

This Summer I paid a shiva call to a shliach who lost his young daughter in a car accident when she reportedly wasn’t wearing a seat belt. Don’t blame the police for enforcing the law, which can save lives. Whoever follows this website knows quite well all of the car accidents that occur in Crown Heights. If we all wear our seatbelts and don’t talk on the phone while driving Crown Heights will be a better, safer place for the shluchim and everyone.

after getting a ticket i relised that a bloototh can cost as little as $30.00 (i got at the cingular store on kingston) and a ticket costs like $115.00. the math is simple just get a bluetooth

I think everyone is missing the point here. The police aren’t out to get ‘us’! This very car 1733 has not been in Crown Heights in over a month, it’s just the timing that sucks, we have a convention going on in our neighborhood and it is then that they decided to bring the car in.

The aforementioned car is dedicated to only giving out tickets, and you know what, they probably have quotas too, but what the NYPD achieved with this is that they stuck their foot in their mouth, because now 3000 emissaries are going to return to their respective states and countries and what they are going to remember is the ticket they got, and their resentment towards our police force. They will not remember the 4 officers that ‘walked the beat’ up Kingston and the other 4 that did the same on Albany.

Now there seems to be a trend in which everyone (ok, not everyone, but most) think that they are only going after Jews, let us understand the difference, there is a ‘traffic division’ which they give parking tickets, they are not part of the 71st Precinct and they do not give moving violations. Then there is the regular cops who are assigned to ticket duty, they give moving violations such as cell phone and seatbelt tickets.

All in all I believe that someone upstairs in the 71st should have thought better then to put the car out here THIS weekend, that’s all.

    Humble Resident

p.s. always wear a seatbelt and don’t use your phone while driving, the latter making you a complete jerk on the road.

  • Officer Krupke

    To Fair and Balanced:

NYPD cops are permitted to use cell phones while on the job and while driving an RMP (radio mobile patrol) car.

  • seatbelts only

    To here we go again

Who cares if you’re a racist? Do you beat up/attack pple cos they’re black? If you don’t, what’s the problem? You are allowed to have personal opinions and express your concerns just like anyone else. This pandering to "others" makes me ill.

The point is, we have a moral obligation to drive safely. I get tickets too, & believe me, I’m angry. But the law is the law & if I’m stupid to break it I can only blame myself.

However, if some concerned citizens decide to video & photograph obvious traffic infractions of "others" that are ignored by PD, take it up with PD higher ups. Then you may have a case for discrimination, racial profiling (in reverse!!), or preferential treatment. But in the meantime…OBEY THE LAW. It’s safer & cheaper.

  • Sara

They not out to get us per-se, but they are definitely looking for them to recive a summons- and this weekend looks like a great time for them to recieve the benefits of giving out tickets.. possibly to people who do deserve them.

  • question

is i allowed to hold a cellphone in your hand if it’s on speakerphone and you’re not holding it to your ear?

  • re: seatbelts only

Racial profiling is targeting a specific race, not targeting blacks. There is no such thing as reverse racism- anti-semitism is the same thing as racism.

Perhaps Techie or Webbie can draft up a letter of complaint to be sent to the office of the mayor and we can all sign it. We should also get a documentation of all of the tickets issued this weekend.

p.s. if you would like help drafting it up, e-mail me.

I got stopped this past sunday. They gave me a ticket for a child on an adults lap that wasn’t wearing a seat belt. They also wrote me 2 more tickets, one for an infant they said wasn’t strapped in a car seat (the baby was in an infant seat strapped in properly, I’m not crazy!) and another child saying she wasnt wearing a seat belt (she was). They ended up taking back those 2 tickets, only after I got angry that they were giving me bogus tickets. (I hope it doesnt show up on my record!) What can we do to make sure cops dont write tickets with no merit?

  • frustrated driver

well, everyone is right about seatbelts and hands-free but what do you do when thte officer gives you a ticket for talking on your phone while you were using hands-free? at the end of the day it’s my word against his… and when I got my ticket and began showing the officer my hands-free device and explaining that I wasn’t speaking/holding the phone he was rude and cynical and called into his radio "I need backup" yeah right, for what? to intimidate me, that’s all. and what did the extra backup do? they had a good laugh.

  • scared of ny drivers

i’m scared of New York drivers. Every time i come to NY, i’m petrified to drive because everyone drives like they’re out to kill anyone in that are in their way. Guys, please drive carefully (i know nobody cares what we think and you dont care that there are other people on the road)
I think it’s good that those police are around to catch thos of you guys who don’t realize there are other people when you drive and those who only care about yourselves. DRIVE SAFER, BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY. BE CONSIDERATE

  • Sgt Bobbie Troise

Once again it appears poeple feel the need to make EXCUSES for breaking the law & making the NYPD "Bad Guys". For every summons issued on Kingston Ave OR ANY OTHER location, 3-4 violators get away. We were chastised when we issued summonses to those making the ILLEGAL right turn at Bais Rivkah, as well as when we issue seat belt and cell phone summonses. The most important thing to understand is it is for the SAFETY of YOU & YOUR FAMILY and NO OTHER reason that summonses are issued. Do they bring the City revenue, sure, but WE, the members of the NYPD do NOT in ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM benefit from this revenue. Too many people see driving as a way to "catch-up" on errands and time, like eating, doing make-up, chatting, etc, etc, etc. This necessary evil saves countless lives, and millions of dollars in medical bills. BE THANKFUL for this. HANDS FREE, MEANS HANDS FREE. Speaker phones do not exempt you from this, BLUE TOOTH does. Perhaps the ONLY potential real issue here is the timing of these summonses, BUT, and this wasn’t the case, Don’t you think an additional 2000 or so people visiting this community TREMENDOUSLY increase the chances of those NOT wearing belts, TALKING on cells, etc, etc. etc. God Bless YOU & all the POLICE who serve and PROTECT us each and every day.
