Beyond the Mask
As we are pulling out the costume box and trying on masks for Purim, it is also a time to look inward and reveal our true identity. Purim can be an ideal time to celebrate the individuality of every student, as we strive to uncover the hidden treasures within. The creative child, the funny one, the musical one, even the shy one in the comfort of a costume they love – they all come to life on this joyous day.
In a world where conformity often overshadows individuality, it’s easy to overlook the nuances and intricacies that make each child special. Yet, Purim teaches us to look beyond the surface and see the unique elements of each one. Every child has an inner world that is different than the next. In Tanya Perek Aleph, we learn that ארבעה יסודות באדם, a person’s character is comprised of the four elements: water, earth, wind, and fire.
Some of our children are sensitive and in need of extra personal, nurturing care. Others are full of energy and need guidance on how to manifest their passionate, go-getter personalities best. Still, others are seekers with an endless thirst for knowledge.
כל אחד עולם מלא
For years, Dovi* struggled in school and at home as he grappled with his place in Yiddishkeit. But slowly, with extra care and personalized learning by his Mechanchim at Darchai Menachem, he began to grow. Recently, his father reached out with the emotional news that “this week Dovi* started davening with excitement again before school. He hasn’t been doing that for a very, very long time. Also, for the first time in years, he said a Dvar Torah and story by the Shabbos table.”
Another student, Mendy*, was struggling in Yeshivos for over 5 years. His mother shared that “for the past two years, he had poor attention and was really not learning at all.”
Rabbi Sandhaus reached out to Mendy* personally and began building a relationship based on trust and mutual respect. In time, he was willing to try a Darchai Yeshiva experience. And everything changed.
“Darchai gives the boys the message: ‘We want you, we value you, we are here for you with open arms,’” shares Mendy’s* mom. “Education is progressive and personal. My son is now going every day because he wants to excel in his learning – even English subjects which he never learned before! The staff is beyond incredible.”
Purim is a time of boundless joy and celebration, but it is also a time for introspection. As we exchange Mishloach Manos and give Tzedakah, let us also take this opportunity to unmask the true essence of every child and affirm their inherent worth and dignity. We can create a world where every child feels seen, valued, and celebrated for who they truly are.
But we cannot do this alone. We rely on the support of our community to continue providing an outstanding education that honors the essence of each child. Your donation enables us to empower more than 150 students to become confident, resilient Chassidim who embrace their elements with pride.
Campaign will kick off on Purim!
Together, let us ensure that every child’s light shines brightly, illuminating the world with their unique gifts and talents. Happy Purim!
