INBOX: With Purim Coming, Don’t Forget The Singles Of The Community

The following letter was sent to CrownHeights.info:

With everyone making your purim preparations – and many are cutting down the extravagance etc., please keep in mind your single friends, or any friends that are not part of a nuclear family.

Purim can be a very isolating time, made even worse when it feels like no one thinks of you because you are single. Sitting home and waiting for shalach monos – or just as bad – coming home after a day of giving out shalach monos just to find that no one thought of you enough to come put something by your door, can feel very bad. Imagine what a good feeling the opposite brings.

Even if you are cutting down on the amount of people you are giving to this year please make sure to give to those who will suffer most from its absence…

This includes singles, divorcee’s, single parents, widow/ers etc.

(Of course if you know any nuclear families that this might apply to please keep them in mind as well.)

I agree. Also please don’t forget about singles on all Yomim Tovim. Please remember to invite them for meals. It means so much and could save a life.

As a single that lives in CH alone without family, I can tell you that for me, yom tov is the most depressing time of the year. There are no distractions of going to work and surfing, just a quiet empty apartment. While you all enjoy the simcha of yom tov with friends and neighbors, I sit alone and forgotten. A freilichen purim to all, be happy and merry, but stop a moment and think of me.
