Lights Out in Crown Heights As Manhole Fire Darkens Blocks

by CrownHeights.info

Crown Heights’s manhole problem sparked again Thursday night when a manhole fire cut power to entire blocks.

A manhole located on Eastern Parkway at the corner of Brooklyn Ave went up in flames around 10:00pm, initially sending lights flickering for blocks around before eventually cutting power to a swath of Crown Heights entirely.

Soon after the underground transformer began smoking, outages were reported along nearly the entire block of 770, as well as far down Brooklyn Ave as President Street. Multiple homes along Union Street were also reporting electrical issues.

This most recent transformer fire comes after just yesterday’s transformer fire on Eastern Parkway and Kingston, which triggered a full day of work by ConEd to repair and replace electrical lines along along Eastern Parkway.

Work from another manhole fore on Kingston Ave just a few days ago also continues along Union Street, with Crown Heightsers morning commute snarled by closed streets and electrical work.

For those looking to make the mad Friday rush up Kingston tomorrow, prepared to be delayed.

Update 11:30pm: Another transformer fire has been reported on New York Ave and Lincoln Pl.
