Night Is When The Brightest Stars Come Out To Shine

This is a bedtime story. For adults. (Kids too.)

Every night in the humble shtetl of Crown Heights, thousands of families put their beloved children to bed. They say Shema, tuck them in and say good night. These wonderful parents are at peace because they know that as night falls over their beautiful community, Hatzalah members on night shift duty will ensure that the dark hours are never totally dark.

After a long, hard, exhausting day, you, the parents and people of Crown Heights, are falling off of your feet. Before reposing, you turn your phones to silent, offering a reprieve from the shrill pings of life.

Seventy-five of your neighbors (and their wives, more on these monumental lifesavers to come) go to sleep very differently.

Instead of turning their phones off, they turn up the volume on their radios. The soft cushioning of their pillows is interrupted by an awkward antenna.

You see, every night, two members of Hatzalah in Crown Heights are on night watch, sitting in “Car -1”, ready to cover any calls that come in. All the other members, even those not on night duty, are on call and ready to respond at a moment’s notice. Every single night.

If that means to help a child that fell out of bed at 3:00 am or a new baby that chose to come to the world at 4:00 am, even in the middle of the night, when you are all sleeping peacefully, we are up and ready to respond in record timing.

After all, night is when the stars come out.

What is a star? A star is someone who is ready to leave his family in the middle of the night just to help yours. A star is someone who lies down to bed knowing that he will get up just for you.

We hope that this bedtime story will help you sleep peacefully. We also hope that it will inspire you to give heartily.
