Members of the Crown Heights community were fed up with the city’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and have taken matters into their own hands.
Community members gathered outside the Albany Ave entrance to Lefferts Park, which had been chained shut by the governments orders.
The group snipped the chain keeping the gate closed, and allowed a large group of adults and children inside.
Soon after the police showed up at the park, claiming that they had received a complaint regarding people in the park. The officers approached each person, informing them that should they not leave the park, the situation would “escalate.”
The community members complied, leaving the park in an orderly fashion.
One of those at the protest told CrownHeights.info that “While the community is pushing back against the Mayors rules, the organizers have made it known that they are only protesting against the Mayors rules, and not the NYPD. The officers of the NYPD are doing their duty, and should be treated with proper courtesy and respect.”
Another “chain breaking” is scheduled for 5:30pm at Brower Park with Heshy Tischler, with another planned for Lincoln Park soon after.
Heshy Tischler was the first to stand up against the order to close the parks standing in Boro Park and Williamsburg alongside the residents as they opened the gates.
Donald Trump Jr. also stepped up to the plate, calling out the Mayors double standard on twitter. “So let me get this straight? Everyone other than orthodox Jews (who simply want to let their children play in city parks) are allowed to take the law into their own hands in New York City?”
