Under 5’ 10 Opens New Location in Crown Heights
After years of buying clothes that didn’t fit, (and looked only slightly better after tailoring) businessman Elie Robinson threw his last pair of expensive off-the-rack trousers in the bin and created a line of clothing that has taken the fashion world by storm.
With the average height of American men being 5’ 10, there are millions of people (can we hear a cheer from the 40 million American men to be exact) that fall just below that mark. Once the jokes have worn off, Under 5’ 10 fills a gap in the market that large retailers have yet to, offering customers a wardrobe that doesn’t need tailoring and allows men to feel confident in their clothing.
With the idea in mind to make affordable and stylish clothing for shorter men, Robinson reached out to various friends in the industry to get their first shirt developed. ‘Our fit was based and perfected on hundreds of surveys and sizing charts in the industry and while we initially only focussed on one product, we now have an entire collection of jeans, chinos, dress pants, henleys, polos, and shoes.’ Rumour has it the brand also has jackets in the works.
Teaming up with co-owners Jonathan Glaubach and Greg Grinman, this fashion-conscious trio opened their first store in Cedarhurst New York (and created a large online customer database across the United States) less than a year ago. If this wasn’t enough, Under 5’10 has recently brought their dapper styles to the streets of Crown Heights, Brooklyn. With plans for more store rollouts in Manhattan and other locations in the near future, Under 5’ 10 has no intention of slowing down, thus testimony to their ever-growing, loyal customer base.
‘The idea of clothing engineered specifically for men under 5’10 is a novel concept to men that have been looking for clothing that fits them’ says Grinman. And while one would think it’s mostly gents who walk into the stores, don’t discount their partners, ‘we get so many fashion-conscious partners coming into the stores and buying numerous items for the men in their lives. After that, it’s only a matter of time before they come back themselves’.
Their secret to beating out the competition? ‘We try our best to maintain the approach that although we are in the specialty/solution wear category, our prices don’t have to be prohibitive to the average customer’ says Glaubach’.
Self-described as the underdog with a fashion sense, Under 5’10 offers quality wear, with a made-to- measure fit that men are excited to bring on to their friends and extended social group. As more people understand the issues with their clothing, they will demand clothing that fits their bodies properly. In turn, they will become less likely to settle for a less-than-perfect product.
While many men get sent pictures of the store as the butt of a joke in a group chat after the sting has worn off, clients come in to see what Under 5’10 is all about and keep returning; for good reason.
