Crown Heights Shooting Prompts Anti-Violence Rally

Examiner

The shooting of a Crown Heights teenager last month prompted a rally on Thursday, Sept. 19 of African-American residents and others against the violence dominating their streets.

The rally was organized by Save Our Streets (S.O.S.), a Black community effort to rid the neighborhood of gun violence.

The shooting, which took place in late August, happened in the early morning hour of 1:20 a.m. according to NY1, and witnesses said it appeared the 17-year-old boy shot, Darius Robinson, was not the intended target of a passing SUV that opened fire.

Drive by shootings are a problem in many gang-controlled communities, and between rival gangs, but Robinson’s cousin, Barson Harkless, says his cousin was just “a regular guy.”

No arrest has been made in the case, which has prompted the community to continue to rally and raise awareness of the violence that continues to grow in Crown Heights.

    “the violence dominating their streets”
“the violence that continues to grow”
Note the passive construction. This violence must appear spontaneously, perhaps coming from outer space??
They will never solve this until they take ownership of the problem. Try this: “the violence their fellow African-Americans commit.”

I totally respect this effort, and think it is the best move, to do this. Its WAAAAAY late for this but better now than never.

Rallies and protests. How about someone who knows what happened come forward, contact the police, and make sure the murderers are brought to justice? How much more awareness is needed? Rallies present a nice photo opportunity, but where is the action plan? It’s very frustrating. People stand around with signs and talk about awareness…but it shouldn’t take the place of actually doing something.
