Hero Crown Heights Cop Remembered in Ceremony

NY Post

L-R: Russel Timoshenko’s parents, Leonid and Tatyana, joined NYPD Detective Herman Yan and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly Saturday to honor Timoshenko, an officer who was shot dead in 2007.

A gifted athlete, straight-A-student and stand-out cop who was shot dead on routine patrol five years ago in Crown Heights was remembered yesterday during a memorial service.

Russel Timoshenko was 23 and on the job less than two years when he was gunned down during a vehicle stop.

“He patrolled these very streets making Crown Heights safer for everyone who lives and works here,” Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told 200 people at the memorial service. “That’s exactly what he was doing on July 9, 2007, when he was tragically shot in the line of duty.”

Timoshenko and his partner, Herman Yan, scanned a license plate on a BMW and discovered the plate didn’t match the new SUV.

The pair ordered the driver to pull over. They found out the vehicle was stolen.

As Timoshenko and his partner approached, bullets blasted through the SUV’s windows, into Yan’s arm and chest. Yan’s vest stopped the bullet.

Timoshenko wasn’t as lucky.

He was struck in the face and died five days later.

His parents, Leonid and Tatyana, had no other children.

The family had moved from Belarus to New York with his parents when Timoshenko was 9. As a boy, Timoshenko played basketball in Bay Ridge. In high school on Staten Island, he played lacrosse. He made the honor roll in college and thought about becoming an engineer.

Instead, he became a cop.

Timoshenko graduated the police academy in the top 15 percent of his class. In 18 months on the job, he had already distinguished himself with 15 arrests, including three felonies, Kelly said.

“Russel attended Community Council meetings to better understand the concerns of the people he served,” Kelly said.

About 200 of those poeple and fellow members of the NYPD joined Timoshenko’s family and his partner yesterday to plant a tree in his honor. They dedicated a plaque. And they remembered what Timoshenko and his loved ones sacrificed.

not for nothing; however, dying at work makes you a victim not a hero plus the dead victim did not approach the car with due caution or his folks wouldn’t be suffering

  • IZZY

He is hero. And Penina is a sick, ungreatful loser.
This cop is a hero and should be given kavos for hus ultimate sacrifice.

  • Thank You Russel, g-d bless you!

Kol Hakovod to the Police Officer who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of Duty. You are a true hero.

penina is a sicko weenie and is probably not even a jew! If I saw your ugly face I would spit.

  • idiot #1

Shut up, penina! Chinfo, her comment should be removed as highly inappropriate. Sick chick. What an embarrassment.

  • Jews are supposed to be smart?

Penina, do you realize his parents might be reading the comments on this story? An idiot like you needs to add salt to their wounds!? Jews are supposed to be smart. I’m not so sure. With idiots like Penina, Crown Heights must have some of the dumbest Jews in the world.

  • Penina wasn-t even at the crime scene

So how does she know Timoshenko did not approach the car with due caution.

  • A CH resident who thinks before he speak

Ch.info out of respect for Timoshenko. Please remove comment #1, Penina’s stupid thoughtless insensitive remark. Timoshenko is a HERO!!! May he rest in peace and may G-d bless his wonderful parents!

  • we had sent a plaque shortly after

Shortly after he was killed, a group of Jewish young people from Crown Heights had sent a plaque to both his parents and the 71st precint in his memory, and in gratitude and in tribute to who he was and what he had done to make our town a safer place. May he RIP. And may G-D grant his family strength and comfort.

  • Is Penina a Church member?

Eli Ezaqui and Penina: congrats! You both win Darwin Awards! You’re about as smart as the people from the Westboro Baptist Church. It wouldn’t surprise me to learn you clowns are followers of that Church.

For the sake of your family, let’s hope people are more sensitive by your funerals. In case you’re wondering; the Westboro Baptist Church are those loons who protest against U.S. soldiers at their funerals. I’m sure Eli and Penina would agree those soldiers are “Victims” not heroes. Also, Penina would Chastise them for not exercising due caution and causing their family grief.

To continue…It was shocking to see a “Penina,” other than myself, make a mockery of Officer Timoshenko’s ultimate sacrifice. He died as a hero in the line of duty. It is only fitting that his heroic actions be remembered annually and appropriately.

It offers little comfort to his bereaved parents especially since he was their only child…but it is still the right thing to do.
