Police Parade Blocks Off Empire Blvd., Cars Towed

Many homeowners on and around Empire Blvd. were left confused and frustrated this morning after discovering that the street had been blocked off and their cars towed without any prior notification.

The boulevard has been cleared in preparation for the annual NYPD-community parade – hosted by the 71st precinct – which will take place today. The event organizers seek to foster positive relationships between the Jewish and African/Caribbean-American communities and the police department.

Although the residents of the street are usually notified in advance of the upcoming event, for whatever reason this year no such notification was issued, and the residents were caught by surprise.

Although the cars had been moved from the street, they were not “towed” per se; the car owners will be able to retrieve the car without any fees or fines.

If your car has been moved, call the 71st precinct at 718 735 0511, or have a look around the surrounding blocks as you may be able to find it yourself without too much difficulty.

  • really?

relationships between the Jewish and African/Caribbean-American ??

Really? thats why they did not notify the jewish community and thats why they chose the same day as the israel day parade

  • Frustrated

That happened to me once in Willy when some Rebbe was marrying off a kid. No warning signs posted then either. I nearly had a stroke when I came out of work & my car was gone! I was lucky, there was a cop in a scooter who asked me my car’s license plate, looked down his list & told me where to find it. My advice, march into 71st & ask WHICH COP STOLE MY CAR?!

  • 71st should be ashamed

Isn’t it ironic that the “harmony” parade being thrown by our friendly neighborhood precinct are the very same people that without warning towed dozens of Jewish peoples cars this morning ?????? Unreal …. I saw it personally today and there was not one sign to be seen on the entire street.

It’s obvious what this is and why it wasn’t considered important to notify those who would be inconvenienced. Not a clever community relations move.

Good, I like what I see, Achdus between all citizens. Let’s keep up the good work.

  • Disgusted

Not only were they blocking off Empire but before that happened they had NY Ave blocked off from Empire. There was NOTHING happening on NY Ave which necessitated blocking the street; other than to inconvenience us. When I told the cop that I lived on Malbone he wouldn’t let me go from NY. He told me to go around and back up the street! Legal? Definitely not, but they do it all the time anyways! CHUTZPAH!!

First two pictures: Chana Jacobson(VP of the 71st Precinct Community Council) and son Yossi are at the head of the parade!

#1: The parade was at 11:30 A.M. and thus did not conflict with Israel Day parade.

  • Waste of Tax-Payer Money

Is it just me? or except for the two holding the sign, there isn’t a Jew to be seen there?
All i see are African-Caribbean-Jamaican-American. (I wanted to make sure to be full politically correct here and sound as absurd as possible.)

  • Interesting...

I love how it’s a unity parade when I didn’t even know about it. Who is this unity parade between?

  • to # 2,3,4,6

they did up signs all over Empire, East New York, & all over Lefferts park dont be so quick to blame them they did notify us you just didn’t see the signs

  • Positive relationships

In case anyone needs to know exactly what ‘positive relationships’ are, here’s a quick reminder:
Positive relationships are those where people go about their business quietly, without assaulting, murdering, vandalizing, robbing, swearing at, insulting, or purposely causing problems and obstructions to the peace.
