Mislabeled Loaf of Bread Causes Uproar

A few days ago, we published a photo of a loaf of bread purchased at the Empire Kosher supermarket, with what appeared to be a second price label raising the cost of the loaf by 50 cents.

However, bakery department operator Yoily Glick tells us it was just a simple mistake: the sticker for a different – and cheaper – bread had mistakenly been placed on the loaf, and the correct one was placed on top of it.

“I had customers coming over to me and complaining about the price change when it was all just a simple case of mislabeling” said Yoily.

In the comments that followed the photo, many readers complained about a disturbing trend in the supermarket in which various items were being marked up in price. “That has nothing to do with me, we put our own prices on the baked goods and our prices have always been competitive” said Mr. Glick.

CrownHeights.info would like to issue an apology for publishing the photo without proper reaserch, and we would like to clarify that there was no ill will intended.

Although our intention was simply and solely to demonstrate the severe effects of inflation in today’s economy, many made the mistake of assuming that Empire Kosher, or the independent Glick’s bakery which operates inside, was engaged in price gouging. This is simply not true, and for that we apologize.

  • spring water - overpriced

costco sells 6 bottles of the large bottles of poland spring water for $5.70 empire kosher sells the same 6 for $8.94
we all know someone who shops there make sure you get them there

  • mislabeling?

i checked out and nobody said sorry the price is a mistake here is a refund!!

  • Thank you

Thank you CHI for taking responsibility for an irresponsible move!!

I”d like to point out, that in general the store is competitively priced. To all the comment’s about shopping out of CH, in CRM-kollel or the like – it’s all about the pre- & ill-conceived notion that CH’s is a rip-off & everyone else is better, cheaper & more fair.

Yes, there is some items the other stores are cheaper – just as EK & other stores in CH have some items that are cheaper than other stores.

    It’s a false assumption!

While if you are buying large amouts of some item’s it may pay to shop out of CH, remember that you’re probably making up whatever you saved by buying other items that are cheaper here. + the added expence of time, gas & parking… you didn’t save much.

    Stay informed!

  • to the uneducated CH consumer

    dear #2.

Yes & costco charges you $50-$100 for the “privilege” of shopping there. you have to shop a lot to make that-up. Costco is also a bulk-buyers club. you can’t get just one…

  • D A N R A TH

You’re going to drive out to Hoopitsville Kings Country for Costco for a lousy bread? Go to Empire, it’s the safest cheapest thing.

  • to add to #5

to add to #5 the products sold at costco are often at a loss to the supplier and its only worth their while as they get the publicity and more products sold.

  • mother

Ty CHI for clarifying but its not right to put a stores name and address on ur site if u didnt research u dont do that u had the whole label and thats not right and I like EK gas is soooo much to go else where and Yoily and his crew are very friendly the give cookies to litte babies and try to be very friendly with the costumers Thank You EK

  • Someone in the know

They still should have removed the old label or changed the bag……as far as I know the law is that if there is a price mistake they have to give it to you for whatever price is on there.

If you really are honest … change how u make yourself look!

  • spell check

for people who don’t do research- you clearly don’t use spell check either.

  • to # 5

True it does not pay to have a membership just for water, but everyone in CH knows someone in CH with membership and you can ask them to pick up a case

PS anyone that buys spring water can use 6 of them (most people buy a few cs at a time from EK)

  • reponding to #2

    to #2
ive been to coscto yes its cheaper but they dont deliver to your door

  • Glicks is the most delicious!

I have to say – Glicks has the best tasting cakes, challah..etc that I’ve ever tasted!!! Thank you Glicks!

  • dan

to number 7 no one is selling water to get there name out there at a loss also to make up the difference in costco it would take 1 week of shopping for a family of 6 to pay for the membership in general costco marks everything up 12 % across the board by empire its around 40-50 % by the kollel store its 25-30 % if you do not like the prices shop elsewhere no one is forcing any one to shop by him a lot of stores offer delivery from bp from emails or faxes

  • Give the guy a break!

I love their baked goods, and he is a very nice man. I will continue to buy their challah because it’s addictive.

  • amazon dad

Try amazon subscribe and save for 15 pct discount plus a “prime free shipping subscription” to save on paper goods, diapers, wipes. If you take the time to analyze the per diaper, wipe, tissue, toilet paper square price you can find items as close to or better than costco, kollel store etc and empire kosher!, than with the added convenience of home drop off. If you open an amazon credit card that’s another 3 pct back on your purchases.

  • to # 15

1 – its tzedaka to save myself money, and its tzedaka from the store owners not to rip us off

2 – scamming someone and then giving large amounts to tzedakah does not do any good

3 – it says in rashi that you must buy your food from your local stores but that is only if they have the same products and same prices as someone else, if they are much higher you can purchase them from anywhere

  • I am # 2

Just for the record, i was just using the spring water from costco as a example!

I can give you over 200 items that you can find 20-30% cheaper then empire kosher!

At the end of the day people still shop there because of convenience and as long as he buys everyone out there is no way to stop him

  • shopper

While I’m sure price gouging goes on everywhere I’m just as sure this specific incident was a mistake. Many of the workers in Empire Kosher are illiterate, stupid or both. And they are very rude by the way (Yoely is not!)

  • Kollel

    Sorry I do not agree
    over the past few months
No where price want up only here in CH Empire Kosher bakery
I stopped buying here and it worth to go to kollel store just for bakery goods.
people should stop buying at this bakery
I checked Kollel bakery prices are 4.99 per pound cakes to all cakes Challahs almost a dollar cheaper then Empire Kosher bakery.
the funny thing the baking good same as here Starns Bakery
once you their please check the CHK meat Department .
    They also deliver
is simply absurd we pay huge prices over Boro Park.

  • Chizuk haShechuna

I would like to see some of those who depend on Itzik for credit tell their sob stories to Costco or even KRM.

  • Yossi family of 6

Keep in mind I’ve bean ordering from the Krm koller store at info@krmsupermarket.com we r savings about 40-60 dollars every week
We don’t have 2 get out off house everything is done on the email delivery with in 2-4 hours , their food is FRESH &CHEAPER!
This bread 12 grain is selling for 2.59 at the koller store , this is just one example their r some many other items for much cheaper , check out the comment on the original picture , let’s front it up “this is not the place to save money”

  • what happened to being dan lekaf zechus?

I know the workers in this bakery personaly. They are hard working, good, honest people, and eager to please their customers. Doesn’t the fact that they stand there handing out cookies to kids for free while their parents shop tell you something? I mean come on people, haven’t you ever made an honest mistake?
Thank you to this site for your well deserved apology, as it’s quite obvious you’ll be more cautous with your postings in the future.
a very loyal and satisfied costomer from glicks bakery in empire kosher

  • yossi a

it might be true that the bakery dept is independent from EK. i dont know the detailes of the deal, that being said, EK is overpriced. EVRYTHING in EK is 20-60 cents more than at KRM. you can look at their (supposeingly) sale this week they have a BIG sale on an 8 pack of mini cookies for $3.99. GUESS what, at KRM is is ALWAYS $3.99….YOELI take note, even albany bakery a CH shechuna local store is cheaper than you

  • fair prices

empire kosher was supposed to be the kollel store of crown heights, till someone figured that everyone thinks it’s cheaper, so they ould slowly raise prices and fool thir customers.
it’s a family monopoly, no oompetition.
Give us fair prices or give us costco and kollel!
by the way, tights in BP are $1-$2 cheaper for the identical item. When you buy 10-12 pairs for yourself and each of your daughters for Pesach, you will save $100s on tights alone! Why do we have to be ripped off in our own back yard?
remember, a sale of more than 6% profit is not kosher.

  • dovid

to 27 i wonder the last time you asked itzik for credit,he dosnt give ANYONE CREDIT.

  • awacs

By the by, many CH stores do not sticker individual items (nearly all are required, except milk and the like).

Would reporting them to NYC DCA be mesira?

  • Boruch Sholom Wolf

This is really disgusting me. You people live in CH, and when the economy is so bad that keeping the money in the neighborhood would do all good, you start listing a million reasons to be mekarev everyone to take their business to outside CH.

Many people enjoy actually shopping in a store as opposed to emailing a shopping list. When you drive to Boro Park, that alone cost several dollars of gas. Since parking by KRM isn’t easy, factor in a greater chance for getting a ticket. And the factor in the tine, time is money…

It’s not a crime to shop elsewhere if you can’t afford CH prices, but to start naming cheaper competitors online for all is achzorius. Sure you can save a few dollars on your next suit by going to a discount store and shopping their clearance rack, but is it appropiate to lambast the local clothiers for charging a shtickel premium on the public web? Those who truly can’t afford to shop in CH will find a way of accessing the info where is cheapest… No need to print it here, vdal.

And by the way, EK does offer a 5 star shopping experience (parking, wide isles, clean etc.), so obviously you have to expect them to redistribute that overhead into pricing.

  • anon

oh my goodness! # 31, and #333, DID YOU ACCTUALY MAKE AN ERROR???? lets report you to the fdc.
to #35, by the by? what does that mean? oh, you made a small mistake too??

people, do you get the point here?
    PEOPLE MAKE HONEST MISTAKES.

  • illeterate CH

agree with #2, and to some please spell check… so the by the by and words like shour would appear less

  • to # 37

You are obviously missing the point which is to get EK to lower their price and at least match the going rate, and everyone will be happy

  • to 40

The dynamics in CH are different than outside CH. And within CH, empire kosher has a greater overhead (relative to the other grocery stores) because it’s beautiful, has a parking lot, well staffed, spacious etc. so you are comparing apples to oranges. I doubt the place can carry a profit if they charge KRM prices.

  • to # 41

You are wrong the overhead in BP 5 towns flatbush are greater then CH and most of them like the KRM offer a much larger parking lot unlike EK which is a tiny garden which had over 5 accidents already

  • awacs

38: “ to #35, by the by? what does that mean? oh, you made a small mistake too??”

39: “please spell check… so the by the by and words like shour would appear less”

Uh, ‘by the by’ is a phrase in English. It’s an idiom to introduce a new topic. Google it if you don’t believe me.

“people, do you get the point here?
    PEOPLE MAKE HONEST MISTAKES.”

Do you think not stickering *every item* in the store, in violation of the law, is an honest mistake?
