Crown Heights [CHI] — The entire 770 has been evacuated and all the morning regulars are congregating outside due to a suspicious package that has been mysteriously placed at the “Shalash” entrance (between old and new 770 buildings). The NYPD’s bomb squad is on the way to inspect the package and determine what further steps must be taken. Update: Package determined to be harmless.

Update: 11:13 AM

The Police Department has now closed off Eastern Parkway from Albany Ave., all the way to New York Ave.

A bomb squad official has approached the package in a ‘HazMat’ suit to inspect it, but no physical contact has yet been made with the parcel.

The young man who discovered the suspicious item told Crownheights.info that he originally approached the Police Command Center across from the museum at 9:45 AM, and was brushed off twice. A call was made to 911 a few minutes later, and it took police over an hour to arrive at the scene.

Update: 11:27 AM

‘All clear’ signal given. Package was determined to be harmless, and people are beginning to stream back into 770.

It’s not a laughing matter. These packages should always be reported and not assumed to be harmless.
