DOT Traffic Device Mistaken as Suspicious Package
CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — Brooklyn Avenue was shut down for an hour Monday evening after police received an alert for a suspicious package, which turned out to be a Department of Transportation traffic measuring device, and it took a Shomrim volunteers to figure it out.
Police cordoned off the area in of the device being a bomb, but were too afraid to take a close look themselves.
A Shomrim volunteer who happened to be passing by recognized the device immediately and offered to get the information off the box so that the police can verify it themselves. After warning him that he would be putting himself at risk, the Shomrim member got down and copied the information off the box. A half hour later a DOT worker came by and identified the device.
