Yitchok Shuchat Arrested, Faces Extradition to U.S.

A Suspect who allegedly beat 2 African Americans in Brooklyn in 2008 and then escaped to Israel was arrested and now faces Extradition to the U.S.

The international department of the State Attorney’s Office petitioned the Jerusalem District Court on Sunday to determine whether 28-year-old Yitzchak Shuchat can be extradited to the United States. Shuchat is wanted in the New York on hate crime charges, having allegedly beaten two African Americans in April 2008.

According to the extradition request, Shuchat attacked the men with a wooden club in the Crown Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn, without provocation. The beating cause one of the men serious injuries and an arrest warrant was issued for Shuchat for second degree assault and hate crime.

The assault was defined as a hate crime because the parties did not know each other prior to the attack and because there was no other apparent motive. The extradition request also pointed to tense relations between Jews and African Americans in the neighborhood as a reason to believe that race was a factor.

The extradition request stated that Shuchat escaped to Canada three weeks after the attack and then came to Israel three days later. Shuchat is an Israeli citizen, but prior to 2008 had only visited rarely.

In its petition the state asked the court to agree to extradition since the appropriate causes existed.

Shuchat was arrested on Sunday and will go before the court on Monday for the hearing.

    I heard the offered Shuchat a plea deal of three years in prison and six years probation and anger management course. Shuchat is an idiot from not taking the deal.

    Going to court and facing trial (with possible jail time) is no big deal. The justice system worked out for the Shomrim six less then two years ago, surly justice will prevail here.

    Let the jury decide whose right and if Shuchat did the crime let him pay the time.

    I’m a big shomrim/hershkop fan, but why are people hoping that he rots in jail for 3 years? He’s still a yid. I’m sure the fact that he’s not allowed to return to the USA (for his own protection) is quite a kappara for his stupidity (a person only sins if it’s nichnas boi ruach shtus) for calling 311 to do mesirah. Am I missing something? Honestly, I’m not aware of the facts, in other words how much damage he caused the hershkops/shomrim.

    But for the very least, I hope shmirah learns a lesson and sees the yad Hashem. They shouldn’t be so eager to get the police to ticket shomrim etc. It’s a one way rishus as far as I can see, because if the shomrim were mosrim, they would call every TV station to do a story on how Spritzer parks his trucks illegally.     Some of the foolish people here calling for justice have no idea what prison life is like. Blacks are more than 50% of the inmates. They dont treat Jews with much kindness any time.     Regarding Shuchat. When confronted and given a chance to repent, he did not take it and in fact continued with greater vigor. I feel nothing for him and for those who sent him to do this dirty work.

    it is very true that if it was the other way around, the Jews would not be treated fairly and the other side would probably get a light punishment, not to fit the crime…..BUT the reason that we have less of our own people doing this kind of crime is because we take RESPONSIBILITY for ourselves to a great degree. So even if we shoulder alot more, we do take more responsiblity and that is how we maintain our dignity.

    Let the justice system do it’s thing, after all look how it worked out for the Shomrim Six.

    Shomrim Six had over 120 counts against them combined and they made it through not guilty. Shuchat only has a few counts.
