Darchai Boys Find a New Pen Pal in SM Rubashkin

At Darchai Menachem, we are extra proud of our students when they take the initiative to suggest new projects or activities. We were therefore super excited when Simcha T. asked his English teacher Rabbi Welton if they could write letters in class to Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin.

The teacher happily agreed and the rest of his classmates joined in. They proceeded to write heartfelt letters, expressing their desire for Sholom Mordechai’s freedom, with Hashem’s help right away.

Last week, Simcha was delighted to receive a reply letter from Sholom Mordechai. It was presented to the class by the Hebrew principal, Rabbi Bension, and read by Rabbi Slavin, principal of the English department.

Rabbi Rubashkin mentioned how touched he was to receive the letters and ask that Simcha personally thank each of his fellow students for writing to him. Rabbi Rubashkin went on to name each student who had sent him a letter.

“The students reached out on their own to someone in need,” Rabbi Bension said, and mentioned that words that come from the heart enter the heart. This idea was also expressed by Sholom Rubashkin who included those same words in his letter.

What a perfect idea! But have to watch what we write to him because they could be misused against him and the community. Not sure if they have the “right” to confiscate or read his letters. I’m sure they can always say it is “reasonable suspicion.”
