A Tale of Two Season for Yaffa Wigs in the DegelUSA League in LI
Crown Heightsers were represented for the first time in the DegelUSA Football league, and despite an amazing season start, the wheels fell off as the season came to a close, with the Yaffa Wigs getting knocked out this week.
The Good:
The team came into the league by storm, shocking the league with realling off three wins in a row to start the season, started falling apart as the season went on. The Quarterback started the season real hot real hot, throwing Touchdowns to Chesky Herz, Zevi Steinahuser, Sruly Adelman and more. In the first four games the team was 3-1, the stingiest defense in the whole league!
The bad:
Unfortunately the quarterback fell apart and so did the defense… They finished the season 3-4. They tried two other QB’s but the defense couldn’t hold the other teams down.
The Ugly:
With all the ups and downs, the team known as Yaffa Wigs, still had a chance to make the playoffs, with a one game show down with the Lobos. The Offense showed up and scored 26 points which ripped through the Lobos defense, but that was undermined with the help of the the Yaffa Wigs defense, along with a terrible call by an umpire against Sruly Adelman. The game ended with 34 points scored against them.
The team included: Yanky Lokshin, Sruly and Ari Adelman, Zevi Steinahuser, Meir Stein, Zalman Shuchat, Shloime Rotter, (45) Yitzy Cole, Shmuly Weiss, Chezy and Mendy Herz.
A Special Thanks to Yaffa Wigs for sponsoring the team.
DegelUSA was founded by commissioners, Elie Mansdorf and Jason Pinewski. Now in its fourth season, the currently adult only league has expanded to 16 teams and plays its games on Sunday mornings in Lawrence, NY
As students in Jerusalem, Mansdorf and Pinewski participated in AFI (American Football in Israel). The league consists of transplanted Americans and plays in a Stadium dedicated by Mr. Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots. When they returned it was their vision to organize a flag football league in the United States, where organized flag football did not exist in the Jewish community.
DegelUSA is modeled after the ever-growing AFI, and features an almost identical rulebook. Many of DegelUSA’s teams are sponsored by businesses in the metropolitan area, whose names and logos are prominently displayed on team uniforms.
Elie and Jason look forward to expanding DegelUSA next spring. The expansion will result in the formation of several new divisions, including high school, and junior high school. The commissioners are looking forward to a successful season, and are excited at the thought of flag football energizing the Jewish community.
