Shabbos Siren Sounds Late

The ever so dependable Shabbos siren has not been so this past Friday. 4 minutes after Shabbos began the siren suddenly sounded, followed by another just one minute later.

This is the second time the siren has malfunction this year, and the third time in the past two years. This year the siren sounded mid-week, setting people off on a frenzied internet search for answers, causing CrownHeights.info’s servers to overload.

Mendel Goldstein, the father of the Shabbos siren, told CrownHeights.info that for the past few months he has been manually activating the siren, since construction began in the Shul. This week he was not able to make it in time.

    That was so weird.
I was wondering why the air was so still.
Nothing to remind me that shabbos is coming!

    What was the problem?

I don’t understand the reason to have a siren at all, no other jewish community has a siren to announce the coming of Shabbos!

  • cml

I was told by a rep in city hall that the church on brooklyn ave sin gs all morning as a fair deal to our shabbos siron

  • Time is up

Old habits die hard and it’s time (no pun intended)to bury this one.
Dogs and cows need whistles humans today have watches and clocks..give us some credit.

The siren has not been ringing on time for months. it used to be that the second ring would be 2 minutes before Shabbos, but lately it rings at least 10 minutes to Shabbos
to 2. yes, other communities also have sirens, if you listen you can hear one every Friday. Not sure if it’s from BP or Flatbush.

  • been around town.

dear out of towner, im not sure where ur from, or how many cities uve been to. but just in brooklyn alone there are more than three sirens that go off every erev shabbos (Williamsburg, flatbush, b. park..). they do in kfar chabad and yerushalayim as well….

  • problem

The problem is that people relay on the siren. From now on – we have to know that it’s unreliable.

What are you talking about all the comunitys in new york has sirens.

  • do like in israel

in israel instead of the siren they play some jewish music

The siren is based on an ancient Jewish tradition to blow shofar several times on Erev Shabbos, to give people warning that it’s coming. The last shofar-blast would be right before shkia.

in CH about 1 year ago the first siren 18 min. before candle-lighting would be 30min. before shabbos, so if you still rely an the siren than:(, happy i live on shlichus and not in CH, now i dont come to be mechalel shabbos

People should not rely on the siren alone. They should also check the correct time for licht bentchin on the calendar or Chabad.org and light on time. I always bentch ten minutes early, and it’s a wonderful feeling to know that I’ve taken in Shabbos while women down the block are still driving home with bags of groceries… (What’s if G-d forbid the car should break down those last few minutes, or they get into a fender bender…) Let’s make a hachlotah to bentch on time – with or without a siren.

    1. The siren is definitely an issue for the new Vaad and Beis Din. The times have been erratic, In five years since I have been counting I have established absolutely no pattern of timing vis-s-vis licht Bentchen. So I will need some convincing that this last Friday was a mechanical accident. If the Dow Jones could drop 1,000 poinyt because soeone hit the key with his thumb (or big toe), then the CHT’s siren can suffer the same…
    2. It is time for all chassidim to learn the Hilchessa about Shabbos that the Alter Rebbe put in the Siddur. He places such great stress and caution. That is why in years bygone, emmesseh chassidim would be mekabel shabbos at licht-bentchen time. For those who care: According to the R’EM (R.Eliyahu Mozrachi – a Rishon) the shkiya is exactly 3 minutes after the Licht bentchen time.
    3. One of the embarrassements when bringing erleche yidden to CHT’s is the the level of chilul erev-shabbos….
