For the tenth consecutive year Mr. Greens is cutting holiday produce costs for Crown Heights educators.

This coming Friday, a total of eighty-seven Crown Heights families of rebbeim and teachers will collect Pesach orders of fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and wine, at a highly reduced cost. This is made possible by Mr. Greens market and by donations from local benefactors and organizations.

One of the Oholei Torah rebbeim who coordinates the program explained that while the average family of ten spends about $2,000 on food for Yom Tov – including matzah, wine, meat, and fresh produce – the program allows for families to spend about half of that amount. This year, enough donations were made to cover the costs of all of the fruit and vegetable orders, and coordinators hope that more donations will be made to reduce the costs of meat and wine by half.

It became apparent to the owners of Mr. Greens that it must be difficult for families, who are living off already low teachers’ salaries, to afford the added expenses that come with Pesach. Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch – the educational arm of Chabad-Lubavitch – understood the pressing need and granted generous funding to the distribution program for Lubavitch teachers.

Having grown up in Crown Heights and later attributing the store’s success to the neighborhood, the owners of Mr. Greens said they felt the need to give back to their community. Mr. Greens donates the delivery truck and driver, as well as provides the produce at below wholesale cost. The produce from HuntsPoint Terminal Market located in the Bronx, N.Y, along with other products at reduced cost by several vendors, will be available for pickup outside Oholei Torah this coming Friday.

The program, through which close to $100,000 worth of products will be distributed this year alone, is coordinated by a group of Oholei Torah rebbeim and serves families of rebbeim who teach at Oholei Torah, Lubavitch Yeshiva, Chovevei Torah, Cheder at the Ohel, and Darchai Menachem.

Beautiful and VERY nice to see. Wondering what about the girls’ school teachers?

Thank you Rabbi Kotlarsky of Merkas who does so much to get the money needed to help pay for the produce and wants no one to know.

  • A Grateful Recipient

The purpose of this program is to help teachers in a dignified manner – without any fanfare or publicity. It is for this reason that the donor remains anonymous. He performs the mitzvah on the highest level of Mattan Beseser – the recipients do not know the donor nor does the donor know the individuals that directly benefit. His benevolence eases the financial burden thereby adding to the joy of Yom Tov. The owners of Mr. Green participates by providing the truck and making arrangements with the market and this too is very much appreciated.
