11:21pm: Shabbos Siren Goes off – Apparent Accident

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Just moments ago the Shabbos siren was triggered for no apparent reason prompting an unprecedented amount of calls to our call system, and a crushing amount of traffic to CrownHeights.info.

Reb Mendel Goldstein, who takes care of the siren, told CrownHeights.info that the alarm was triggered by accident, and was due to the construction being done in the Shul where the alarm is mounted.

“There is nothing to be worried about, I shut off the main power and it will not go off again” Goldstein told CrownHeights.info.

The siren sounded for approximately 45 seconds, until it was shut off. In the first minutes from when the siren sounded CrownHeights.info received thousands of simultaneous connections, nearly bringing our server down and causing it to become sporadically unavailable.

“Every single person who heard the siren and has an internet connection visited CrownHeights.info in the moments after the alarm sounded to find out what occurred” said Binyomin Lifshitz “CrownHeights.info is the #1 source Crown Heightsers turn to in order to find out what happens in our neighborhood.”

This isn’t the first time the siren went off at an unscheduled time, last year the siren went off a day before Rosh Hashanah.

  • Whew!

There should be a better system in place to let us know what the siren may mean. I’m glad it was nothing.

  • an war survivor

I hate the sound of this siren it reminds me of war and running to the shelter just when the enemy was in our city and ready to attack. Do you think it’s fare to hear this unpleasent siren right before shabboss? maybe a song from MBD or AVRAHAM FRIED could replace this alarm?

why in the world would people complain about the system?
it is an excellent system and even though there might be some minor mistakes, you know it’s helping you.
with a busy city life, the siren helps lots of people out by knowing when what who where and why about Shabbos.
Goldstein is doing us all a favor here and people are just so unappreciative.

  • living with Marxism.

    Dear Adam Curry,

You are exactly right. In fact, it’s to signal the destruction of society as we know it.

  • I guess not

I also thought Moshiach was here – and that there was a Farbrengen in 770!

  • Nuke

I got really scared – I thought it was a bomb scare and then it hit me: We don’t have bomb shelters!

  • MOSHIACH MANIACS

just so u know – mendel goldstein will get a call as soon as moshiach comes and he will turn on the siren so we can all find out…..u ppl r nuts the siren does not indicate the coming of moshiach – itll be a shofer, and trust me it wont b coming from the corner of montgomery and kingston…….

  • To the one who wrote Moshiach Maniacs

Maybe Mendel heard the shofar and sounded the alarm for those that didn’t hear.
I bet this was a test of the emergency broadcasting system. Hashem made the alarm go off to test how ready we are to receive Moshiach. The first thought in MY head was … Moshiach is here! My house is a mess! Maybe next time ( the real shofar sounding) I’ll just say… Moshiach is here! Lets go!

  • me ken plotzin

my heart almost flew out when i heard the sound the first few seconds. in the past on more than one occasion the sound went off for not such good reasons. soooooo baruch hashem that at least it was a false alarm. but hey moshiach where are you anyway??????????its time to HEAR YOUR !SOUND!!!!!!!!

  • We Need Moshiach Right Now!!!!!

Rebbe, Oh Rebbe, we need you
    Hashem, Hashem, Keil Rachum
We’re sick of this Golus can’t bear any more
Why don’t you open the door?

Your children are yearning to be with you
How long can this Golus continue?
Bring the Geulah, fulfilling your vow
    To bring Moshiach, right now!

As a busy mom who listens for the siren every week, when it is set properly, and goes off at the times that it is supposed to I love it. Thank u Mendel Goldstien for ur invaluable work to help the tzibur,, now if we can just have it go off at the right times, and not 30 mins before shabbos,, ****sigh**** I definitely do not have ta’anos,, I am not doing the work it entails,,

  • yyh

When I heard the alarm I was Davkeh very happy… last time the Rebbe left us, this time I though he is joining us with Moshiach, unfortunately it was a false alarm.
Generally, the alarm needs to be much more specific in time, too many times the alarm goes on too early, like 10 minutes early, (instead of 15 minutes before candle lighting, its 25 before, etc …same is with 2nd alarm) this is not right, and it must be corrected, other wise Mendel Goldstein deserves a Big Yashir Koach.

  • Are we cows?

Having a siren every week to remind people it’s Shabbos is like calling in the cows for milking. It has out lived it’s usefulness.

If people aren’t smart enough to pay attention to the time too bad.

  • I thought

I thought that someone was bored and decided to play a prank..

Ps …is there a shrink in the house?

  • Harried dad

I gave up on that silly noise maker. It used to be on the money. Since way back – its been having seizures and timing is off. Prior to shabbos the siren makes no sense and can NOT be relied on. We simply look at the watch like everyone in my building. AT this point it has become a public nuseance (help – someone spell that please!)

  • New Age Electronics

I thought the sound of Moshiach blowing the shofar has been, like everything else, turned digital!

  • criown heighser

there is no one to blame, there is construction going on in the shul and there was a malfunction, plain and simple..

    a yasher koach to mendel.

  • CHT

They should have made another siren that stands for “residents of crown heights, everything is ok, please go to sleep in piece … tuuuuu tu tu tu tu”

  • Come on!

If it was really Moshiach, YOU WOULD FEEL IT. The fact that you all felt the same feeling of fear etc… shows that it’s not Moshiach.

  • Obama synonymous with Moshiach

The siren was the marking of the beginning of Obama Care which is like Moshiach’s times so so it was not a mistake rather a marking of a new time of Moshiach/ObamaCare

On a side note, it would be useful to stress test your software and hosting provider for such bursts of user requests.

It seems your mysql database was the bottleneck; you can most probably reduce queries for repeated requests like this.

It is, of course, gratifying for you to know that the site is relied on (congratulations on that), but it also comes with increased responsibility. I am on one of those who went to check right after the siren and got an error page yesterday. In a real emergency (ch”v) your site may be essential, especially since it is associated with Shomrim who are best informed.

  • FREAKY! :)

THAT WAS THE FREAKIEST THING EVER! I seriously thought Moshiach was here, but then again, i learnt that the shofar blowing will be ten times louder! so yea.. it didnt really make sense.. But a Massive YASHER KOACH TO MENDLE FOR ALL HIS WORK! But please, try for the alarms to be off at the right time so the residents of crown heights wont totally freak out!! :) thanx!!

  • we want moshicah now !

thats funny because our family also thought moshiach was here!!!!!

  • early bedder

I decided to go to bed early.. i finally fell in deep sleep and then woken up?!!?!?!? I then thought i was in a dream!!

    moshiach now!

get ready… Just open up ur eyes!

  • to moshiach maniacs commenter...

when moshiach comes EVERYONE will be able to hear the shofar so he wont have to put the siren for “those who didnt hear”…..
