Mr. Baguette Puts Chanukah Smiles on Hundreds of Children’s Faces

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A local restaurant gave back to the community this holiday with the only special of its kind: Black Chanukah.

The idea came from one of the owners’ nine-year-old sons asking him why there are no “Black Friday” sales in Crown Heights. “Why don’t we give things away for cheap?” the child asked. A so began the new tradition of “Black Chanukah.”

The Black Chanukah special, which included a 99-cent menu, was held on Thursday and Friday of the holiday, with 500 sale items purchased on the first day alone, and the line of customers extending out the door at times.

And since schools in the neighborhood have noon dismissal on Fridays, Mr. Baguette served over 500 students during two hours of the pre-Shabbos rush.

Menachem Mendel Light, one of the owners, said he enjoyed seeing the smiles on the children’s faces so much that he promised another restaurant special within the next few months for children only.

One customer told CHI: “In today’s economy, anything that’s not essential has been cut out, and that includes pizza shops, restaurants and other non essential expenses that also affect children, unfortunately. Therefore, sales like this one help our parents by easing their burden and making us kids happy – a wonderful Chanukah gift!

This was great.. MY 5 children each had a pizza and a pasta and it cost my $12.00! Thats including me eating 2 baguettes filled with vegetables.
From what I saw the portions that my children were given were regular sized.
Thank you Mr Baguette for making this possible, without the sale my family couldn’t afford to go out to eat.
