Part of Empire Boulevard Roadway Collapses

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Late afternoon a large crater formed in the west-bound lanes of Empire Boulevard. The sinkhole was approximately 10 feet in diameter and roughly 4 feet deep, and thankfully formed while there were no cars traveling above the spot.

The incident took place between Rogers and Bedford Avenues, concerned motorists called 911 and police dispatched a squad car to cordon off the area and make sure no passing traffic falls into the hole.

This incident exposes serious concern for New York City’s aging roadways and infrastructures, nearly two years ago a ConEdison steam pipe exploded in midtown Manhattan and killed two people. The steam pipe was installed in 1924. Crown Heightsers though are more familiar with trouble spots around the neighborhood that are ‘powder kegs’ waiting to explode, or implode as one resident put it.

Brooklyn’s Community Board 9 recently voted on plant to completely upgrade Kingston Avenue, including sewers, electricity, and roadways, a plan which is expected to start within a year, and take at least a year to complete.

A thinking person would stop and ask, why are the physical bricks and stones of our neighborhood showing such signs of decay and disrepair? Why are fetid pock marks erupting like gigantic zits in the very streets of Crown Heights, threatening to swallow us up like the sons of Korach? Could G-d be trying to tell us something by first pouring out his wrath upon the stones of his temple rather than upon his people Israel?

This is the Rebbe’s shechuna, the place where Beis Rabeinu Shebibavel currently rests. Yet we defile the holy atmosphere by walking around with shaved chins held high, while our wives or worse – our girlfriends – stride beside us in their super tight, too short pencil skirts and their figure hugging shirts.

Worse yet, we respect this new modern orthodoxy by lauding the achievments of the outreach centers like Beis Shmuel and Ohel Nosson. We are proud of our yeshiva dropouts, we celebrate them as progressive rebels, as long as they make enough money to wash away their other ineptitudes. We pompously cite Enlish playrights like Congreve to make social commentaries.

My friends, Crown Heights is sick. Everyone knows that the body starts decomposing only after the soul has made its exit.

Let’s see if we can’t somehow get it back.

I wonder how many more future sink holes there are in NY. With today’s technology they should be able to identify them.

  • crown street motorist

Instead of digging up Crown & blasting crazy music instead of actually getting the job done in 1 day, the DOT should have been taking care of Empire!

  • What is happening to the roads??????

As I was driving to and from Boro Park this afternoon, shortly before I passed our new monument on Empire, I did notice that there are several more potholes/sinkholes/lochs in the roadway along the way than I remember from my last trip. The roads definitely seem to be deteriorating all over.

  • TrueTrue

    Sam, you are a Tzaddik.
You hit the nail on the head.
Spread your word out there… we need more voices.

  • Dear Sam the Troll

    Dear Troll,

Many of your points are well taken.

HOWEVER, about the ”outreach centers“ (as you call them):
There’s been a lot of confusion in this community about how to view those who are not completely ”on the derech“ but who live here anyway.

I think you need to rethink your view of places like Beis Shmuel, etc. The key difference is that at Beis Shmuel, the people are ”on their way UP the derech,“ whereas, on the street, one often assumes that a man who shaves, or a woman who wears a tichel and has a lot of hair showing is ”on their way DOWN from the derech“.

And that person on the street, about whom we’re often guilty of assuming the worst, may also be on their way ”UP“.

I’m not saying that we don’t have problems here in CH, b’ruchnius u’b’gashmius. And I’m NOT saying we should automatically assume that all people behaving questionably are surely on their way ”UP”.

But Sam, come up with some ANSWERS, not just prosaic, veltliche-educated complaints. You seem like a person of some intelligence.

Surely you have practical ideas about what would help.

  • fed up!!

enough is enough!!! we need Achdus in our community. that will stop all these terrible things!! this is not the first time this is happening to our Shcuna. what would your grandfather say to a hole in the road?!! Oy that’s awful :(
there’s 5 things i suggest that will inite us once and for all
    1) the prices in pizza shop be lowered.
    2) the yechi signs in 770 be changed to green
    3) we all vote for Chanina for president 2012!!
    4) Crownheights.info and col unite. enough of this hatred!! please Hahsem!!
    5) all comments that are posted on ch.info be posted so people can feel free to express their feelings.

  • I completely agree BUT.......

Those who are appalled by what they witness around them in crown heights, should do something instead of just complaining about it.
If you really care and you are deeply hurt by what is happening to the jewish people in our community, then start some sort of campaign or program or SOMETHING to help the situation.
Sitting back and just criticizing everyone for their wrong doings isn’t the way to go.
If you want to see a change….then start MAKING one and you will see how many others will build up the courage and follow in your ways. Some people just need to find another person who is eager to do something and only then would they follow and speak up about what they feel needs to be done to help.
    TALK LESS, DO MORE!

  • in reply to fed up!!

If you have nothing intelligent to say DON’T SAY IT! You sound like an immature person who doesn’t really have anything of significance to say. How about you just don’t share what’s on your mind, because clearly it’s all mockery and it isn’t needed nor necessary!
Ever heard of the quote: “ It’s better to remain silent and be thought a fool then to open your mouth and remove all doubt ”

surely you can see how that applies here.
