New Parking Regulations on Eastern Pkwy, over 15 Ticketed

Cars lined with tickets.

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Crown Heights is one neighborhood in Brooklyn which already has some of the worst and most stringent street cleaning regulations, four times a week and at all hours of the day. The Department of Sanitation, who is the agency in charge of street cleaning, decided to make it even worse.

Residents walking down Eastern Parkway on Friday from Albany to Kingston were left scratching their head and wondering why every single car on the block supported a ticket on its windshield. Turns out street cleaning regulations were changed on the block the day before.

Out of character of every other block on Eastern Parkway, these new regulations are the most absurd, every single day of the week excluding Sunday, from 8:00am to 8:30am, which replaced the original 11:00am to 12:30pm Tuesday, Friday and Saturday regulations. On the block before this one the regulations start at 11:00am to 12:30am and the one after is 9:30am to 11:00am, making the change even more baffling.

One motorist who received a ticket took a look at it wondering why in the world she got the ticket was astounded to find out that it was for the new street cleaning regulations “my first thought of course was that a new officer hit the wrong side of parkway thus resulting in an erroneous ticket blitz” she said “so I took a second look at the street cleaning signs and was absolutely shocked to see that they were changed, with out any notice!”

Community Board 9’s Jacob Goldstein informed me that they have no control over the regulations and that residents should call 311 and complain.

Residents are also encouraged to dispute these tickets, which is easy to do so online by Clicking Here.

  • just wondering

I think it might have something to do with the fact that there’s a museum on the block. Gives the whole block a different (more important?) status.

Call Chanina Sperlin and NY City Council Member Letitia James. Her number is (718)260-9191.

She can call the Sanitation Commissioner and change the rules. This street is in her district.

Chanina can talk to Mayor Bloomberg, who is his good friend. You can find Chanina during davening in 770.

  • look at the bright side

look a the bright side – only 1/2 hour to move your car instead of 1 1/2 hours. I wish they did this on my side of Eastern Pkwy. – Do you know what it is like to find a spot between 11 and 12:30? you can circle for an hour!!!I think though that every block on Eastern Pkwy. should have the same rules!

    @just wondering
I agree with you %100. Dispute these tickets but not the motive.

  • plead not guilty first

even if you don’t want to make phone calls and just pay the ticket, plead NOT GUILTY first. They will automatically after a few days give you a reduced counter offer, so your ticket will be at least 25% less. You can do this online.

  • disagree

i disagree with you, just wondering, i dont think its a good time. when everyone is busy getting ready for work, school, etc. you dont have time to run out and move your car!

only CH has alternate side 4 times a week?

Correction: Only CH as some streets that have alternate side SIX TIMES a week!
On Eastern Pkwy, (not just with this new sign) we always have alternate side on shabbos as well! There are times where I’m out 20 minutes before shabbos after circling for an hour, and can’t find parking anywhere!
What can we do about it????????????

  • Nu?

Wow, this is crazy! You’ve got to see this to believe it.

Is there anything we can all do to change this?

  • community

Why can’t we just act like a community for once and step up together, instead of criticizing one another call 311 it will get us a lot further than complaining.
    stop enough is enough.

  • I Know why ! Its good for the Community

I Think its there to stop people from parking their car a whole day using up important much needed parking and take the subway to work

  • Parking

I don’t know if anyone will agree with this, but I think that we need a few parking garages in Crown Heights with low monthly rates.

Where? Well, for one thing there is the possibility of converting a building into a several story parking garage.

But, knowing the Crown Heights mentality, none of this will ever happen.

That’s a big problem in crownheights…because THEY NEED TO WAKE UP IN THE MORNING….So unusual….

It’s not because there’s a museum on the block. The block of St. Marks Avenue between Brooklyn and Kingston, where the Brooklyn Children’s Museum is located, has normal (for this part of Brooklyn) street-cleaning rules: twice a week on each side, for an hour and a half at a time.

No, it’s simply because Mike Bloomberg’s New York City is going bankrupt yet again, and what better way to raise some cash than by doing so on the backs of the taxpayers? If they’re religious Jews (that side of the block is almost, maybe even completely, Jewish) – why, then, that’s simply icing on the cake!
