Cell Towers added to roof of 706 Eastern Pkwy

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — The rooftop of 706 Eastern Parkway has been a mess of cell phone antennas and towers for quite some time hosting as many as three separate companies equipment up there. Today a crane deployed and added another two truckloads of radio equipment to the roof, and residents are up in arms.

Rooftops have been dubbed as the “landlords gold mines” after they began renting the space out to the cell companies to ‘house’ their communication equipment.

More in the Extended Article.

In a conversation with one of the works he told CrownHeights.info that they were upgrading some of the existing equipment and that they were adding a number of new antennas in order to improve capacity and cell coverage in the area, when asked which company the equipment was for he declined to answer.

In the past residents have raised a storm over the towers, saying that they are a long term health hazard, while the cell phone companies deny that saying that it’s been approved by the FCC.

These things spew cancer!! The landlords should be sued! I think all the tenants and neighbors should sue the landlord.

The cell phone towers on 706 Eastern Parkway are extremely dangerous. When you are in the building using your cell phone, the cell phone can get very hot and the part of your head that is next to the cell phone can begin to hurt.
There are many studies done on cell phone towers/antennas and there are many countries and at least one state where they are outlawed within several hundred feet of a school!!!
Scans of people’s brains before and after having been in close proximity to a cell phone show a distinct change for the worse-the change for the worse is especially significant in infants, children and elderly people.
THE ANTENNAS ON TOP OF 706 EASTERN PARKWAY ARE DANGEROUS NOT ONLY FOR IT’S RESIDENTS BUT FOR ALL THOSE LIVING IN CROWN HEIGHTS-ESPECIALLY OHOLEI TORAH AND 770 AS THERE ARE MANY CHILDREN THERE.
I called the Crown Heights community council and was transfered from one person to the next. Finally one person told me-oh, there’s nothing we can do call your city councilor or gvmt. When I tried to ask what the Crown Heights Community Council was there for if not to advocate for it’s residents, he repeated the same thing he had just said and then hung up the phone on me.
There is tons of reserach available on the dangers of these antennas just google it.
And keep in mind, there are towers in several places in Crown Heights: On Empire and Brooklyn (not far from Bais Rivkah), on Troy and Eastern Parkway (not far from Chovevei)and more…
Kol hakovod to all the building owners who have said NO! to the phone companies
We have tried hard to do something, but because it is officially legal and considerd ok (so was smoking initially), you need a huge amount of people and/or a huge ‘noise’ to fight it.
People know about it…We once had a group of students from NYU who were sent to 706 Eaqstern Parkway to investigate the matter. We have to use the media and blast the companies who have towers on these buildings.
The name of the management company for 706 Eastern Paerkway is Serhof Realty Corp. To express your utter disgust at their actions and demand the removal of these towers call them and your government too.
The owner of the building is a Jewish man who inherited it through his wife. his father-in-law was apparently an extremely nice person and a ba’al tzedoko. Things at 706 EP changed drastically once this younger guy took over. Something must finally be done.

How do you know that? Present the proof, if you want to make such silly comments from a REPUTABLE medical source (not moveon.org).

  • klamke

dont understand if you feel its a health risk move. maybe then the landlord will remove them. however since the landlord knows you wont move thats why he does it.

  • perturbed resident

we cant just sit down and take this!!
the companies did this in park slope, and the residents were up in arms!! they caused suck a ruckus that the companies came here, to crown heights. and now, many many people have become EXTREMELY ILL living in this building.
    SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!
putting peoples lives at risk FOR MONEY!!!

  • Trying to get the facts

Well, I also heard that cell phone towers cause cancer, but I only heard it, I did not research it. So, after reading this article, I decided to do just that.

I went to the american cancer society, and according to them, cell phone towers do NOT cause cancer. There is a very informative article (link below) which explains the that the radiation is non-ionizing radiation which is the same like the FM and AM of a radio. They say it is different then getting an x-ray, which is the harmful type.

These things are really dangerous. There is plenty of medical research to back that claim. All you have to do is research it a little. I feel really bad for the peple who live near by. If more people understood the real danger here this would never be tolerated.

Garbage. There is not a single study published in a reputable journal that substantiates these fears. It’s pure panic-mongering by people who get their jollies by making people afraid. There is no danger at all, and I would be delighted to have it on my roof if they would pay me.

Why do you comment on this site? you hate Lubavitch, Crown Heights, and anything jewish so why not mind your own bussines and get a job for PETA?

  • Cellphonesaredangerous

I applaude “trying to get the facts”. IMHO, cell phones in general are not healthy. The proven dangers seem to be from the phones themselves, not the towers. I’m not saying that they’re healthy, but we all use computers, monitors, overeat, underexercise. If tenants wish to complain, they should at least get the facts. As soon as the towers are outlawed based on such proven hazards, the towers will be removed.

  • Milhouse

Mark, what drugs are you on? Where do you get off making such accusations? You have no idea who I am or what I hate, and are just making things up. You should be ashamed of yourself.

The fact is that there is NO EVIDENCE AT ALL that cell phones or antennas have any bad effects on health. None. It’s not that some studies show an effect and others don’t, and it’s shonuy bemachlokes. There’s no machlokes about it, everybody who knows anything at all about the subject agrees that there is no danger. The claims of danger are ALL made by panic-mongers who get off on making people afraid, and “advocacy groups” who make their living raising money from those who are afraid. And trial lawyers who are hoping to build a new area for frivolous lawsuits. They’re all exploiting gullible people. Now THAT’S whom I hate.

  • You say there is no research?!?!!!!

A study of the health effects on people living in the vicinity of cell phone station, (Santini et al, Pathologie Biologie, Paris, 2002), found significant health effects on people living within 300 metres of cell phone units. A combined study, based on medical records, by doctors at the Kaplan Medical Center, Rehovot, Israel, and the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel-Aviv, Israel, found that people living within 350 meters of a cell phone station, showed a four fold increased incidence of yene machle compared to the general population of Israel, and a tenfold increase specifically among women. (International Journal of Cancer Prevention; 1, 2, 2004) There are many additional studies that agree with these findings.

  • Study the studies

There is a published study on cell phone towers that the people living within a 1/2 mile of the tower have a three fold increase in gross income than those living further away. Also, in Mishpacha they had an article that the block on which a cell phone tower is installed, has fewer pot holes, and coincidently, the children have fewer cavities than others in the neighbourhood. There is an additional study that shows that landlords who rent space to cell phone towers also own bungalows.

  • YITZCHAK

I WAS TOLD TODAY THAT THE FAMILY LIVING JUST UNDER THE ANTENAS AT 706 EASTERN PARKWAY SHAKE WHEN THEY ENTER THEIR APT. AS A RESULT OF THE RADIATION. IT IS TIME WE ACT BEFORE WE CH”V LOSE A NESHOMO.

  • Action Now

To make the towers useless we should have the whole top floor leave their micro waves all the time for a week it will interfere with the towers and render them useless

  • Ruchneous Health Reminder

Since CH info is concerned for CH residents health, perhaps you could remind people to guard their health thru actions the Rebbe would suggest:
    1. Check Mezzuzahs and tefillin
    2. carry a chitas in your car
    3. give tzeduka each day
    4. secure a pushka to the kitchen wall
    5. place chitas and pushka in childrens’ rooms
    6. place shir hamalos by cribs and strollers
    7. purchase a letter in the ‘safer’ Torah for every house member
    thank you
    BE WELL

I coordinate the NY State Coalition to REgulate Antennae Siting, a group of community organizations and elected officials in NY City and Albany determined to legislate against rooftop antennae sitings in residential neighborhoods. There are, by the way, safer alternate technologies not being used, like satellite technology. Furthermore, existing antennae power can be shared between cell phone companies without requiring three or four companies on a rooftop.
Read my web site, safeantenna.org, and look under “Hot Off the Press” and “Research” sections. The American Cancer Society is full of people from the industry, and pays scientists to write research papers, according to my friend who works there. There are compelling studies from Austria, Sweden, Egypt, Israel, Australia and New Zealand, documenting cancer clusters near a high preponderance of cell antennae. The US is far behind other countries in legislating against the risk because a lobbyist-driven provision in the TElecommunications Act of 1996 prevents cities and states fom banning antennae siting “for health reasons alone.” This is for real. However, Los Angeles County, Palm Beach County, and San Diego County have succesfully banned them from being placed close to schools. A court in Santa Cruz just ruled that bans can be upheld. NY State is a tough one because so many politicians receive ccampaign money from the industry.Park Slope’s former city councilman, Ken Fischer, now represents T-Mobile, and appeared in court opposing my building’s lawsuit against T-Mobile, and again in the City Council hearings on this issue in 2006, representing T-Mobile.My building in Park Slope just reached a settlement with T-Mobile, three and a half years after breaking a contract with them and taking them to court. Councilperson Letitia James is very supportive of resisters against the antennae, aspecially re: 706 Easters Pkwy., as is Assemblywoman Joan Millman, and Peter VAllone in Queens. Reach out to them for help.
