CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A new initiative by the Police is “Cell Phone Registration”, a program which is similar to bike registration which is aimed at being able to return stolen goods and prosecute criminals for the thefts.
“When someone gets arrested and police find on him a cell phone that is suspected to be stolen we cannot do anything but confiscate it” said a police source, he added that “when we take a phone and put the ultraviolet light and find the registration number we can contact the owner and have this criminal prosecuted for the theft as well”.

Yesterday, Police Officer Charlie Ryan, the 71st Precincts Crime Prevention Officer set up in front of Apple Drugs on Kingston and Crown and offered people to register their phones, with around 25 people stopping and completing the registration.
Officer Ryan told CrownHeights.info that there will be another registration on Kingston sometime next week. Stay tuned and we will post the time and date.

Bill Phone
Doesnt every phone have a unique IMEI number which is an individual number that phone gets and if the phone is stolen you call the phone company and that phone gets blocked by eing put on a blacklist?

Bill you are right it does have its own IMEI number, but if you read above if your phone is lost or stolen the police are registering so if it is recovered by them they can return it to you…I have my phone done and the police wrote down the IMEI #, another way to contact me, and they put a serial # on it so it would be easy for them to look up and track me. Also some phones you can change a chip in it, and even if they do that with the black light you can still see the serial # if there is one. The police then would see who is the real owner if it comes down to that..
This is a great idea for everyone in the community to do. Make sure we all get it done.
