SCAM ALERT: “Broken Bottle” Scheme in Crown Heights

Shomrim received a call earlier today about a “broken bottle scam” that was successfully averted thanks to a quick-thinking caller and a rapid response by our volunteers.

How it works:
A scammer intentionally bumps into a passerby and “drops” a bottle of liquor near them, then falsely accuses them of causing the damage. They demand payment on the spot, often using emotional pressure, fake witnesses, or intimidation to extract cash. In some cases, it’s also a setup for pickpocketing.

What to do:
Stay calm, be aware of your surroundings, and don’t admit fault. Suggest calling the police and Shomrim — scammers typically back off once they realize you’re not an easy target.
