CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] – A Bochur was accosted while walking on New York Avenue between Carroll and President Streets yesterday, Tuesday, at around 4:00 PM, by a group of what appeared to be Black teens, who hurled anti-Semitic slurs and profanities at him. The group was composed of around 10 youths all of whom appeared to be on their way home from school.

When the Bochur passed the group, they began to shout “Heil Hitler” and “Run away Jew, Hitler’s coming to kill you all”, along with other profanities. The Bochur crossed the street, approached the youths and asked them if they were aware “that Hitler killed 6 million Jews.” Seeing that the youths appeared shocked, the Bochur continued, “did you know that he hated and killed Blacks just the same?”

Youths Yell Racial Slurs at a Bochur

Following the brief encounter, the Bochur noticed and flagged down a passing police car. Feeling that this incident of racism and anti-Semitism cannot be allowed to occur without consequences, he told the police officers the details of what had transpired. The officers exited their vehicle and approached the group, all of whom fled immediately. The police did, however, manage to apprehend two of the youths.

After speaking to the two apprehended youth, the police officers informed the Bochur that they will fill out a report. The officers also informed the Bochur, to his shock amazement, that although the perpetrators appeared to be older, they were in fact, just 12 years old.

The officers then called for backup and told the Bochur that they will contact the kids’ parents and call them in for a meeting in the Precinct, which the Bochur is welcome to attend.

    Did he go to the police station? because if not, there probably was no meeting or police report.

    All CH residents…take note of this Bochur who had the seichel to answer calmly & logically. Course, I would have been terrified.

    Now what, if anything, will happen next? Maybe some intelligent, educated Yidden can address these kids’ school. Don’t we have ANYONE in CH capable of giving an overview of anti-semitism & racism & engaging in reasonable dialog? They’re young enough to be re-trained. Hopefully.

    the bochur should be commended for his excellent response.

    i have a question about the age of the youth: could it be that the kids lied about their age so as to avoid more severe consequences?

    i hope this thing gets followed up. and maybe if a relationship is developed between the bochur and these kids, then our world would slowly become a lot less foreign to them…. let the kids see that they will live with the consequences of their actions and that you cant just yell things and expect it to go unnoticed…

    Why did the police get involved? What crime did they commit? If all they did was shout, there will certainly be no police report, because there’s nothing to report. This is America, where we have the freedom to say whatever we like.

    I guess they didn’t file a report and just
    told there parents what they said and see what they do.
    Though I don’t think they should do that either (calling the parents) but I guess with minors it’s diffrent.

    This country would have been better off it there were some limitations on the freedom of speech. It certainly SHOULD be a crime to say such offensive comments to others, and there SHOULD be consequences.

    First off, they did throw some junk at me, and yes it was all for the sake of harassment. Second, they were kids, and looked like kids, but they acted like 30 year old Hitler youth. Well, without the brains. Third, as correct as my answers were, it wasn’t said quite nicely and calmly… these kids were never taught to listen to reason. But we cannot be silent when the world is taught baseless hatred.
    Millhouse and Pentax (crappy company btw), there were people with your opinions in the 1930s. Those opinions killed people. A lot of people. Like 8 of my grandfather’s brothers. Oh, and his parents. And cousins. Go ahead and tolerate, be liberal and all that… A free country is to practice religion without being oppressed. You forget why they fought so hard for this place. You forget the big picture. Go drive your little car in your little world of tolerance. This is a waste of time, you will never understand. Go tolerate. I won’t.

    OMG Thank g-d I don’t live in crown heights or am not part of that community anymore. I think the problem is in you and you and you. I see it everyday on the street such separatism like blacks Hispanics Chinese and all other people except Jews are treating like garbage because their different and don’t believe in hashem. Now this may have nothing to do with this story in particular but every incident I witness is. Stop hating people that are different and maybe there will be no such thing as a hate crime in ch. And if this comment is not posted on the website it is testimony to the truth that you hide.

    People yell heil hitler all the time to me, I say the same thing. Its not there fault they have to be brought up differently.there parents and friends say it, so they say the same thing. They are taught jews are bad and dumb.through out their lives they hear it. Even if their parents teach them that jews are not bad, their friends will tell them jews are bad. IM gonna do the same thing he did next time and tell the cops.

    To Anon:

    Your comment is not entirely correct bc although Hitler did indeed ignore Jesse Owens (the black athlete you mentioned – he was not the only black athlete and indeed claims that Hitler saluted him on one occasion – something that is highly contested considering Hitler’s known feelings), Hitler more or less ignored everyone else too.

    Hitler did not want the Olympics to be held in Berlin (and once they started rarely turned up) but was pushed into it & he then decided to use it for political purpose, something the games were supposed to be immune from .

    Many Jewish athletes were first excluded and then after World pressure re-instated.

    Once the games begun it became obvious to all of the athletes when on their tourist excursions that Germany was preparing for war.

    The rest is history.

    To the Bochur: We need more like you, unfortunately one does not always have the courage or know how. Well done.

    Re: tolerance, yes, there are 2 ways to approach such an experience: 1. Ignore them, ”so who’s perfect?“ I guess this is ‘tolerance’ of sorts. 2. ‘Siyach Dato’: speak your mind.
    Considering that The Rebbe, MH”M, said that The Holoc-ast (Rebbe didn’t like appellation) could happen in the U.S. if they didn’t teach morals (either in ‘Bringing Heaven Down to Earth or ‘Be Within Stay Above’), perhaps the right move was taken.
    Also confronting these Blacks shows them that Jews don’t cower in fear.
    I did the same thing once.

    Back in ’91 after the riots, a group of Jewish youth and Black youth were brought together to try and create a dialogue of understanding since Crown Heights was, and is, a neighborhood of many cultures.The outcome was a success which resulted in a greater understanding and tolerance for each other…perhaps it’s time again….

    They should be taken on a two week tour of Rikers or the Tombs and warned that this is where they are headed. And that is only because we don’t have people who do things Williamsburgh style, where these punks would end up with a 2 month tour of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Kings County Hospital and about a year in rehab for daring to start up with Yidden.

    I may be liberal but I don’t think I’m too dumb. No matter how it was said, the Bochur delivered a message, smartly, quickly, and concisely.

    And as to it only being in crown heights… heeeeello where are you living?!?!?! Do you not see israel? And, a lot closer to home, Colombia University in Manhattan- supposedly one of the most liberal and Jew-loving colleges. Swastikas, nooses, so much anti-semitism!! And you know what? There were racial pictures depicted against blacks, too!
