Car Recovered By The NYPD After Tuesday Night Gunpoint Carjacking

A Toyota Prius, stolen at gunpoint in Crown Heights Tuesday night, was recovered Wednesday after a brief vehicle pursuit and identification by a Shomrim volunteer.

As previously reported by CrownHeights.info, a Jewish man was sitting in his vehicle on Union Street Tuesday night when two carjackers came to his windows brandishing a handgun and demanding he hand over his keys. The Jewish man complied, leaving his phone, keys, and EarPods in the vehicle and running away as the two sped off with his car.

The Jewish man quickly flagged down a passerby and called Crown Heights Shomrim and the police, who despite extensively searching the area, were unable to locate the stolen vehicle.

After working to obtain video footage of the carjacking, Shomrim continued to monitor the victims phone and EarPods, getting a ping on the EarPods Wednesday morning in the parking area of a Bolla Market on Atlantic and Bedford Ave.

The EarPods and information were passed on by Shomrim to the detectives on the case.

Wednesday afternoon the vehicle resurfaced when an NYPD summons vehicle attempted to make a stop. The vehicle attempted to flee with the NYPD in pursuit, crashing at the intersection of Atlantic Ave and Franklin Ave with three perpetrators fleeing the vehicle.

Unaware that the car had been stolen, the officers involved in the car stop were doing a usual investigation until two Crown Heights Shomrim volunteers responding to another call on the block identified it as the stolen car.

The Shomrim volunteers successfully contacted the vehicle owner and was able to connect the dots, completing the call from Tuesday night and providing important information and intelligence to the NYPD.

Posting on Social media, Crown Heights Shomrim wrote that “The car that was carjacked at gun point last night was recovered by NYPD in tandem with Shomrim.”
