It’s too soon to know if it’s a hate crime, according to an email sent out by Chabad of Eugene after a break in over night saw the theft of multiple high value items, including Tefillin.
“I hope this email finds you well. Since many of you have already heard, I am writing to provide you with an update regarding the unfortunate incident that occurred last night at Chabad,” Rabbi Berel and Rivky Gurevitch, the Shluchim to Eugene University of Oregon, wrote in an email to students, friends, and alumni. “As some of you may be aware, there was a break-in at our Chabad center last night. During the incident, several high-value items, including computers and Tefillin, were stolen. I want to assure you that a report has been filed, and an ongoing investigation is underway to apprehend those responsible.”
According to the email, it is still too early to know the motives of the break in, and too early to determine if it was a hate crime.
“Nevertheless, we are taking this matter very seriously and are working closely with the authorities to ensure the safety and security of our community,” the Gurevitchs wrote. “Despite this setback, I want to reassure you that Chabad activities will continue as scheduled. We are excited to host an amazing Shabbat dinner this week, as well as the ongoing classes and events. As always, security measures will be in place to ensure the safety of all participants.”
