FRANKFURT, Germany [CHI] – On the second day of Rosh Hashana came the word of the arrest of the suspect, 22, who attacked Rabbi Zalman HaLevi Gurevitch, Shliach to the city of Frankfurt Germany.
Rabbi Gurevitch was attacked last week while walking home Friday night from the Westend-Synagogue with two Shabbos guests when he was attacked and stabbed while his assailant shouted racial slurs.
Attacker Apprehended, Rabbi Doing Better
FRANKFURT, Germany [CHI] – On the second day of Rosh Hashana came the word of the arrest of the suspect, 22, who attacked Rabbi Zalman HaLevi Gurevitch, Shliach to the city of Frankfurt Germany.
Rabbi Gurevitch was attacked last week while walking home Friday night from the Westend-Synagogue with two Shabbos guests when he was attacked and stabbed while his assailant shouted racial slurs.
The assailant was identified as a 22 year old Afghan-German citizen of Frankfurt-Hattersheim, a poor Arabic neighborhood in Frankfurt. The police received a tip from users of an internet sports forum who told police that one of its users knew was posting many details of the attack.
A short while later the suspect was arrested, and later confessed to the stabbing but denied it was racially motivated, he also added that the reason he attacked the Rabbi was because he felt threatened.
Police charged him with attempted murder and are contemplating more charges.
CrownHeights.info was told that Rabbi Gurevitch has been doing much better in recent days and is expected to be released from the hospital soon.
