New Crown Heights Package Thief Takes Things To A New Level

by CrownHeights.info

A new package thief that has begun terrorizing buildings in Crown Heights has taken his illicit trade to a new level, going from thief to burglar.

The man, seen on surveillance camera, has been recorded on multiple occasions approaching the newer buildings of Crown Heights and using a tool to bend the front door security plates and force the locks.

Once inside, the man steals whatever he can find and makes off.

“This subject has been breaking and entering new buildings in the neighborhood,” Crown Heights Shomrim posted along with a photo of the man. “He has caused lots of damage, and steals whatever he can get his hands on.” If you see this man, call Shomrim at 718-774-3333.

The alleged criminal has taken a legal leap from thief to burglar as he differs from other recent package thieves with his use of force to break into buildings. As most package thieves do their crimes in buildings found open or taken from front porches, their crimes are considered thefts. Since this man forces the building’s doors, he is considered a burglar according to New York State, a much heftier crime.

If caught and charged, this alleged burglar would likely to be charged as a third degree D non-violent felony, and could face anything from probation to seven years in prison.
