Black Man Apprehends Black Shoplifter

An African-American man, along with a few bystanders, helped apprehend a shoplifter who stole a toy from a Kingston Avenue store.

The incident occurred today, Tuesday, at around 1:15pm when a black teenager stole a toy from Zakon’s Toys on Kingston Avenue.

“I was in my car when I saw the [shoplifter] open the door and grab a $30 toy that was near the door and run,” said store owner Baruch Naparstek.

A group of witnesses, including an African-American man, a UPS and FedEx driver and the store owner chased after the thief, eventually stopping him a few blocks away on Balfour Place near Empire Boulevard.

“We received a number of calls from witnesses saying that there was some kind of a fight on Balfour Place,” a Shomrim source said. “When we arrived on scene, we observed a black man holding down another black teen with a group of others standing around.”

Shomrim called 911, and when police arrived they took the suspect into custody.

Speaking with CrownHeights.info, the African-American man who first stopped the shoplifter said simply, “I saw him stealing so I chased him and I stopped him.”

      Just goes to show that there are good people and bad people of every race.
      Skin color does not matter. It’s the ethics of each person that counts.

  • Why bother mentioning race?

    It’s unnecessary and uncouth. Why not just mention that someone did a mitzvah and be done with it? And if you’re going to mention the race of one character in the story, why not mention all of them — the store owner, the FexEx guy, whatever.

    The pictures speak for themselves. Seriously.

      So now it is ‘borderline racist’ and ‘uncouth’ to identify a vital piece of information?

      Was it not just the other day when the Chicago cop shot and killed a black man in a hail of 16 bullets, did the media not open each of their articles with “A white police officer shot and killed a black man” (or some variation of that…)?

      Gimmy a break, a black man robbed a shop and another black man didnt like it, so he stopped the guy and helped hold him until police arrived.

      If you found racism in that paragraph then no amount of discussion will cure you of mental illness.

      The realty is, that this is not something we see everyday in Crown Heights. It’s great, wonderful and deserves extra attention. Perhaps others will learn and follow.

      I agree. Being a black Jew (born and raised drum) it bothers me the need to only mention the race of the shoplifter and the one who took him down. This is not a case of other incidents where race played a part. Too bad a young man felt necessary to steal, good for a witness that he felt should just stop him.

    This headline should be taken down. It is very clearly racist, as it implies that the fact that a black man stopped a crime is a surprise. The fact that the author can’t see that is shocking and the people who wrote and screened this story are in dire need of sensitivity training. Imagine a daily news article that said “Jewish man reports his income.” Now do you get it??? It is a tremendous chillul hashem to have this stuff up. This is a public website, and people of all religions and shades read it. It does us no good to come off as a bunch of ignorant racists.
