Over the course of the last few days a number of cars have been broken into, some burglarized while others were vandalized as well. The few reasons cars get broken into are for the loose valuables, which is the most common occurrence, or for hardware in the car such as radios, airbags, navigation systems and computers.
Back quite a number of years ago car manufacturers made the engine computer removable, same as a radio face plate, for that computer was of great value and was being stolen often. Today a set of airbags run around $2000 plus the damage done when they get ripped out of the cars dash. The cars seem specifically targeted, those models include the popular Honda Accord and Pilot, Nissan Altima and Maxima.

Over this past Shabbos there were four break-ins, one on Carroll and New York, window was busted and valuables removed. Another on President between Albany and Kingston, a Nissan Altima was busted into and the airbags were removed. Another on President between Utica and Schenectady in a backyard, second time in a week in that same back yard, a large rock was thrown trough a window of a car and was ransacked. Another car was hit on Carroll St between Kingston and Albany, its window was busted in as well and the car was ranscaed.

On Friday night, around 8:00pm, I was walking on President btw Kingston & Albany. I was able to see from a distance, a tall African-American male leaning with his back towards a car (a silver Honda Accord), shaking it with ferocious body movements. I approached him cautiously, he noticed me only when I was a few feet away. You’ll think he’ll pick and leave? No.
He took out his cellophane (or maybe he was holding it to begin with) and he blurred into it: “Yes, Maria, I’m here standing next to your car and the alarm doesn’t seem to work…” continuing the conversation as he was walking away.
It took me a few long seconds to realize that I just witnessed an attempted car theft. I went down Kingston searching for officers; even the patrol car parked near 770 was absent. All I was able to do is walk back to the scene and report to a neighbor what I just witnessed.

As I wrote, it was Friday night. Except for pikuach nefesh, it is forbidden to be mechalel shabbos. The neighbor was Jewish, but I think that every decent man (Jewish or non-Jewish) hates crime. Do Shomrim respond for such calls on Shabbos?

That man was probably not trying to steal a car, especially at 8:00 pm. Doesn’t sound like a robbery scenerio to me.
