Total Labor Day Weekend Tally: 48 Shot, 8 Dead
Two cops were wounded in a gun battle Monday night, capping off a terrifying spate of shootings that left four people dead on Monday – one a bystander – and marred Brooklyn’s West Indian Day Parade.
The surge of violence wounded eight and put the number of people shot over the weekend around the city to at least 48, including two people who were killed Sunday night. It came the same day the Daily News reported that 24 people were shot in the 24-hour period beginning 6 a.m. Saturday.
The violence culminated in a deadly shootout on Park Place in Crown Heights about 9 p.m., when Leroy Webster, 32, shot Eusi Johnson, 29, to death after they had a fistfight, cops said.
A stray bullet from Webster’s pistol pierced through the head of 56-year-old Denise Gay, who was sitting on her front stoop nearby with her daughter, cops said. Gay was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police arrived and Webster began firing at officers, who shot the gun-wielding man several times, mortally wounding him, sources said.
“There must have been 50 or 60 shots fired,” said witness Dana Kellstrom, 25. “I saw two people shot down on the ground. It was incredible. I ran for my life.”
Two officers were hit during the gunfight, cops said. A bullet grazed the left arm of Police Officer Avichaim Dicken, who was taken to Methodist Hospital. Officer Omar Medina, 36, was hit in the left arm and chest, police said.
He was in stable condition at Brookdale University Hospital. Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly visited both officers last night.
“It was a senseless murder and another painful reminder of of how federal officials fail to take the problem of gun violence seriously,” Bloomberg said of Gay’s death. “It is a matter of life and death and in this case, the death was of an innocent New Yorker.”

the cops don’t deserve that, nobody does. I don’t think there was any year in all these years of this parade, that there was a time when there was not a shooting or killing.
It is so terribly sad that someone is not helping them figure out how to stop it. They need the 7 Noahide laws. very sad. Some loved ones are again mourning useless deaths and some people who don’t know how to have purposeful lives, are in jail or living with the fact that they did such horrible crimes.
who will do something? their leaders are cheating them by not working on this.

maybe they will shut the parade down already!!
Daniel
That’s insane, 3 people dead. Better next time have the U.S. Army standing ready at the guard.Talk of senseless, animal behaviour in this meant to be peaceful parade. What a bunch of animals and idiots. Shame on them. Shoot em down.
Life
And that wraps up this year’s Labor Day Parade! Thanks for coming folks! See you all again next year!
Another Dinkins
Sick, disgusting animal behavior and all the Bloom can come up with is stop the guns.
How about stop putting violent thugs back on the street.
He says it’s not the anti social low life morons in our community it’s the guns that are responsible.
What a jerk for a mayor another Dinkins he hasn’t the guts to tell it like it is.
shvig
enough with this parade!!! let it take place on fifth ave. where all other ethnic parades take place!!
after all these killings the police and city govt. should simply say: no more parade!! too many lives are lost, terror in the streets, etc.!
Riki
Lets do this again next year!

Im not afraid of the guns they carry but Im sickly scared of the bullets flying my way.

This has proven definitvely that there should not be such a parade and especially in a high density populated neighborhood. Bloomberg’s administration is a disgrace. If they wanted aparade, is should be on fith avenue when the city is not working on regular day and with massive armed police and national guard paid for by the pardae organizers and supporters.

The parade was a good reason to prove that people should not live here–after all, to be safe(one hopes) you have to barracade yourself in your apt.
Doctor.
Why is it “a gun problem” instead of criminal problem. Guns do not fire by them selves. I own a gun and I have never shot at anybody. Does it mean my gun is on a good behavior? Or is it me?
Traymore
what horrible reporting! I know that there is a lot of violence, but this article paints a very broad brush and makes it sound like 48 people were shot at the parade. Even the details of the article show that the cop shot incident took place 4 hours after the parade ended, and Not on the parade route. Yes any lives lost is a tragedy and I agree that the violence must be stopped, but articles like this just paint the entire event because of a few knuckleheads targeting other people they know.
awacs
When crime goes DOWN, Bloomberg takes the credit.
When crime goes UP, Bloomberg blames the Feds – for not having gun control like New York does.
“Heads I win, tails New York loses.”
Get it?

These savages should be taken off the streets and thrown into cages with the other animals.

the fear is that the violence expressed during the labor day parade[black on black or black on cops] could easily be turned onto the c.h jewish community. therefore, an armed jewish community could help prevent such a disaster from occurring. if it is known that the jews are armed then the likelihood of such a disaster occurring in crown heights would be greatly diminished.
rj
let’s move all of the ethnic parades to brooklyn where they belong.
TO 14
I dont agree the people who shoot should be punished and there should not be a labor day if people are being killed on labor day every year. another thing make it against the law to sell lijure on laybor day what is labor day for any way.
Sick of all this mess!!
Soooooooo west indians must pay for what the stupid low lives come out and do? Then the way the post is made out “48 people shot” as if 48 people were shot on the parkway….not at all!! It is not the us causing the problems it is the fools who come crash our party and make us look bad!!
