Shomrim Apprehend Auto Burglar

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — A thief broke into a minivan and nearly got away with it thanks to the NYPDs dawdling response time – taking over fifteen minutes to respond to the incident, despite repeated calls from Shomrim volunteers and dispatchers.

The incident occurred on Montgomery Street right off Albany Avenue where the owner of the minivan spotted a black man inside his vehicle. After calling Shomrim he confronted the thief who quickly returned the items he stole; a checkbook and blackberry, apologized and began to flee up Albany Avenue.

Shomrim received the call at around 12:34pm and immediately called 911 while Shomrim volunteers began following the suspect and keeping an eye on him from a distance.

After fifteen minutes went by, police were still a no-show and suspect was in danger of getting away, one Shomrim volunteer approached the suspect and engaged him in conversation, holding him in place for a few minutes in hopes that police finally show up.

When they did it was too late, the suspect had made it across Eastern Parkway and vanished.

Police took the victim and went for a ‘canvass’ in hopes of finding the thief but to no avail.

It was the keen eye of another Shomrim volunteer who spotted the man, albeit in a different shirt, step out of a Laundromat on Albany Avenue and Lincoln Place. After flagging down a police car the man was stopped and arrested.

“Thankfully we got this guy, we walk a fine line on every call, we are not allowed to just grab someone, but the police make it increasingly difficult for us by not responding in a timely manner” said a spokesman for Shomrim, adding “police commissioner Kelly said that ‘[they] would like to be notified right away. We don’t think it’s a good idea to lag in notification to the police. ‘ well we don’t think it’s a good idea to lag in responding to our calls and notifications.”

This is another reason to take security out of the hands of police they only eat donuts and write/fix tickets, and in to the hands of shomrim. The response time is too long the criminals are already on a plane before the police comes.

Two issues remaijn: One–why was the police response so long and what will the Shorim do if the criminal is not so benign? Second, will the new York justice system do its job and send a message out to the city?
