Over the month of Tishrai Shomrim have received over 30 disturbing complaints of stolen Tefillin. Wednesday night a Shomrim member was approached by a not Frum Israeli guy and offered him a pair of Rabeinu Tam’s Tefillin for $380.

The Shomrim member told him he was interested and was led to where the guy stays and shown the Tefillin which still had the owners name on the velvet bag. Police were called and responded immediately and very soon after a Sergeant came to the scene to handle the situation. Police remained on scene for nearly an hour while Shomrim members located the owner of the Tefillin who was then brought on scene and filed an official complaint.

Stolen Tefillin Recovered by Shomrim

The thief was then taken down to the precinct where he was locked up pending transport to central booking then to court.

The thief is known to the community having worked at a car service on Kingston Ave, his roommate said he was a good guy and asked as to why he was arrested only to be informed of the theft of a set of Tefillin, he said that it’s a shame that he had hit some rough times but to take a Bochur’s Tefillin, that is no way to behave.

Police questioned the thief in regards to the other thefts which he vehemently denied anything related to, a quick search of his room didn’t turn up any other pairs of Tefillin.

    yit:

Had you read the article you wouldn’t have asked those questions.

EDIT: Read: …a Shomrim member was approached by a not Frum Israeli guy and offered him a pair of Rabeinu Tam’s Tefillin for $380.

…a quick search of his room didn’t turn up any other pairs of Tefillin.

    Mottel:

Stealing Tefillin? A Rov? Did he ask a Rov before stealing the Tefillin? What is the question exactly?

    Webby,

  • Everyone-s so holy in the -hood

    To Mottel:

when the RABBONIM tell the CHJCC to go to court, that’s OK??? And they go b/c of Kovod, not because they have had to shell out $1500 each that they can’t afford for new Tefillin.

Don’t be an idiot. Get real.

You do the crime, you do the time.

    Great job as always, Shomrim!

  • not right

i still think that mottel is right because the article said that the guy had hard times and obviously hes 100 percent wrong maybe rabbonim couldve helped him out more than just making him spend time and then when he comes out he’ll just be even more angry

If the thief is an israeli cititzen the worst that will happen to him is that he will be sent back to Israel. We don’t need such people here.

And to Mottel: If it were your tefillin that were stolen you’d be singing a different tune.

  • Noch a Mottel

From one Mottel to another, pay more attention when you learn Sotah and you’ll learn what a Chosid Shoiteh is . . .

The Bostoner Rebbe was once asked about the subject of calling the police. His response: If it is a civil disagreement between two Jews, you must go to a Rav and a Jewish Beit Din. If it is a criminal offence, you go to the police.

Quite a few of these car service guys from Israel are illegal aliens anyway. Israel doesn’t need him either, but that is beside the point. Maybe he’ll do tshuva there.

  • Californian.........

Tfillin is such a beatiful mtzvah and it is such a shame to tarnish it with stealing….. he did somehting wrong and he’ll get his punishment for it but who are we to sit around and talk about something that hapepned like that… the only lesson ive learned is dont leave your tfillin laying around becuz someone might swipe it!!!!!!? (btw im a girl so i cant really take this lesson to heart!!!)

  • that-s just the way it is these days, sad

i just find it sad. i think that shomrim could have delt with it. i really don’t think that the police had to be involved.

  • SHOMRIM ROCK

firstly as the member who actually dealt with this incident i can confirm the 3 rabonim were approached and asked what should be done and the rabonim replied he should be arrested due to him being an israeli and him stealing them and then trying to sell it.
second he is actually an american citizen.
