Gang attack on Hasid teen bias, protesters say

A 16-year-old Hasidic boy walking home from a Brooklyn synagogue on Yom Kippur was jumped by a group of teens who called him a “f-----g Jew,” witnesses and his family charged.

Mendel Chesney was heading home about 10 p.m. Sunday when he was attacked by as many eight young men on Carroll St. in Crown Heights, witnesses and police said.

“At first, I thought they might be playing around, so we walked over to where the crowd was. That's when I see the talaisim [prayer shawls] and know it's a Jewish person and hear someone say, 'You f-----g Jew,'” said Michael Gitchel, who lives nearby.

Gang attack on Hasid teen bias, protesters say

A 16-year-old Hasidic boy walking home from a Brooklyn synagogue on Yom Kippur was jumped by a group of teens who called him a “f—–g Jew,” witnesses and his family charged.

Mendel Chesney was heading home about 10 p.m. Sunday when he was attacked by as many eight young men on Carroll St. in Crown Heights, witnesses and police said.

“At first, I thought they might be playing around, so we walked over to where the crowd was. That’s when I see the talaisim [prayer shawls] and know it’s a Jewish person and hear someone say, ‘You f—–g Jew,’” said Michael Gitchel, who lives nearby.

Police confirmed Mendel was beaten, but NYPD officials said investigators have determined the attack was a robbery – not a bias crime.

Upset that the NYPD has not classified the attack as a hate crime, about 700 people rallied Wednesday outside the Chabad-Lubavitch World Headquarters on Eastern Parkway.

“They say it was a mugging, but they didn’t stick their hands in his pocket. This is the epitome of a hate crime, and he’s not being charged as a hate crime,” said Hanoch Hecht, 22, one of the rally organizers.

Mendel told his father, David Chesney, he heard footsteps, turned and was hit in the face with a fist or a rock. He said he fainted, and didn’t hear any anti-Semitic taunts. When he regained consciousness, he heard someone ask for money.

Neighbor Gitchel and his friend Yosef Lezell broke up the melee and chased the attackers into the arms of two cops on patrol from Brooklyn’s 71st Precinct.

Mendel suffered a broken nose and a gash on the back of his head.

Cops arrested three of the alleged attackers and have been looking for as many as five others. Charges were pending against the suspects yesterday. Their names were not available.

“The good people of Crown Heights will not tolerate our children being attacked in the street day after day after day. This is a rally from the heart.”

Right! 7 big guys, against one little 16 year old, probably for money! they thought he would have so much, or that he would be a master in kung-fu, so they brought the whole family. NYPD, you guys are way out of hand.

(besides that most goyim know by now that "da jews dont got no money when they’d be all dressed up!")

it saddens me to see the police turn their head to the bigoted motives in these criminals actions…

do you all realize that you have lost control of your neighborhood? wake up. don’t hide your head in the sand. crown heights has regressed back to a time when it was unsafe to walk the streets during the day. i don’t live there and therefore can’t help to do something but i can beg you to wake up before it is too late. how many people have to get hurt? how bad does the situation have to get?

    Refua shlaima
very sad to hear it happen to a friend
    something has to be done…now!

  • after the cops go ??

In answer to your question, LA. We’ve already had a murder, so it can’t get any worse. Unless, of course, there’s mass murder.

You’re right, though, we HAVE lost control of OUR neighborhood. OUR refers to any law abiding resident, Jew or Black.

I once told a female police officer (over the phone) at the 71st Pct about the 7 Noahide Laws. "Crime would drop to almost zero," I said. If the country would "modernize," (the world too) and come out of the Neanderthal mentality they have, we could have a paradisical existence. She responded: "I’ll lose my job!" — CRIME PAYS.

  • Crown Heights Native

I’ve been a Crown Heights residence all of my life and crimes have been committed by blacks and jews. To protest "the black kid’s" home bears the same biased mentality as the person who attacked the victim. Reading some of the comments here really disappoints me.

Jews need to leave Brooklyn and make aliyah or move to a much safer city. Brooklyn has become a ghetto infested with violent crime!! Guns are increasing. The situation is very bad.
