New Wave of Airbag Thefts in Crown Heights
CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — It seems like we spoke to soon. In our Friday article we reported the theft of rims off of parked cars in the neighborhood, and we noted that airbag thefts seem to have subsided, but that changed this Shabbos after more than five cars were broken into and their airbags were stolen.
The incidents sprawled across Crown Heights with car break-ins on President and Brooklyn, Kingston and Albany, as well as on Carroll and Troy.
Most of the targeted cars were late model Nissans, including Maximas, Altimas and Sentras. In each of the incidents the thief broke in from the rear passenger window, and stole the driver side airbags. The cost of each airbag ranges from $400 to $1000.
Police officers were spotted on Motzai Shabbos all over take police reports from car owners.
Airbags for Terrorism?
One car owner raised a disturbing concern regarding these thefts, he was worried about the possible reason behind these thefts, terrorism.
Airbags contain an explosive charge which in the event of a crash is detonated behind the nylon cushion allowing it to inflate rapidly enough and potentially prevent serious injuries. The explosive is a made up of a compound called sodium azide, a highly explosive and toxic substance.
“What if these thefts are not just intended to fix other cars?” asked the car owner.

These thieves know when to strike….
It is widely known that during cold & windy weather the foot patrols, etc..huddle together in subweay stations and appt lobbies thereby giving the scum free reign of the streets…
I, myself, saw, as I passed by, 4 foot patrol cops huddled together in the lobby of an apt apt building on the corner of Carroll & Brooklyn on friday night…
A constant presence is needed to prevent this nonsense…
These guys also wait until the units pass by to strike…
The sound of the breaking glass is muffled and the theft of airbags, etc.. is speedily accomplished as any alarm is ignored, etc…

Not long ago an auto glass store on Long Island was found guilty of breaking auto windows during night raids in order to create business.
Anyone check dealers that sell airbags and airbag guards?

You forgot to mention the air bag theft on the block of President between Albany and Troy, they broke into a Lexus stole the airbag, they left the rims and tires (nice of them, no?)

For $13 you may be able to solve.
I had my car broken into a few weeks ago and they took my airbag. cost me a bunch of money.
