Dad’s Dying Call
A Brooklyn Laundromat attendant gunned down during a late-night robbery traded a series of heartbreaking phone calls with his family as he lay bleeding to death.
“When he told me he was shot, I started panicking,” Yasha Shamray, the 16-year-old son of victim Yevgeniy Shamray, said of Monday’s ordeal.
“I said, ‘How do you feel?’ He said, ‘It hurts to talk,’ and hung up. I called back a bunch of times and no one was answering. Finally, he picked up but wasn’t saying anything.”
Moments earlier, thugs wearing ski masks ambushed Shamray as he closed up the Laundromat at 375 Troy Ave. in Crown Heights around 11 p.m., said police spokesman Paul Browne.
They made off with just $100 from Shamray’s fanny pack, but left behind his cellphone. Shamray, 45, died of gunshot wounds to the chest and thigh on the way to Kings County Hospital.
Cops said there was no surveillance camera, but had found some videotape of interest from a nearby business.
At the family’s Sheepshead Bay home, Shamray’s wife of 20 years told The Post that her husband couldn’t even speak in his final call.
“There were no words, just breathing,” Larisa Shamray said. “He was in pain and couldn’t talk.”
Larisa Shamray said when her husband first called, she did not realize he had been shot.
“In the beginning, I didn’t have a clear picture of what happened to him,” said the Bennington College occupational therapy student who said her husband’s first call came at 11:15. “I felt he was in pain but I didn’t understand [he’d been shot].”
In a panic, she mistakenly told the 911 operator the Laundromat was located on Troy Street. The operator told her there was no such address but realized the store was on Troy Avenue.
Somehow, because of this error, Larisa Shamray claims it took an hour for emergency workers to show up at the scene.
Browne yesterday insisted there is only one record of Shamray calling 911 at 11:56 p.m. and EMS arrived on the scene by 12:04 a.m.
Browne said that Shamray — who immigrated to the United States from Russia nine years ago — first called his wife, 39, and then his boss, Arial Gorovich, to tell them he had been attacked.
The frantic wife, her son and the victim’s mother arrived a few minutes before the ambulance and said a few people were already inside trying to help.
“He already looked dead because his face was blue and he was getting cold, but he still had a pulse,” the son said. “They were doing CPR, but he died in the ambulance. By the time they got [to the hospital] he was already dead.”
Family members said Shamray cherished his job and had trouble finding work because he was a paranoid schizophrenic and had been taking medication for his condition.
“For just $100? I don’t understand why they shot him,” Yasha Shamray said.

To #6 Black has nothing to do with this. They are thugs, not black thugs. I moved out of Crown heights(thank G-d) and now work with many wonderful black, latino, and asian people.
I hope they catch these murderers. I hope people who call themseves chassidim see beyond the surface of color, or any other differences that are unlike themselves.

Why didnt this shop have cameras, everybody needs them and many have them, not so expensive, at least we could have a picture of the criminals to have something to go on, to protect us. Does the store owner live in Crown Heights? I am dissapointed in the store owner cutting corners with this.
I am so sad for the family to loose their Husband and Father. He was a very nice man, my children are very scared to live here, he was very nice to them.
