10-Year-Old Beaten and Robbed

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — A ten year old Jewish boy was beaten and mugged this afternoon while on his way home from school.

The incident took place on Albany Avenue near President Street where a black male in his early 20’s, who was riding a bike, stopped the kid and asked him “what time is it” to which the kid responded that he did not have a watch, the mugger than asked “what do you have in your backpack” the kid answered that he doesn’t have the time in there, and attempted to run away.

He was shoved to the ground and had has backpack snatched from him, and as the mugger fled he ran over the victim with his bike.

A passerby who heard the victim’s cries for help rushed to his aid, and managed to retrieve the child’s backpack, but did not pursue the perpetrator and instead turned to help the victim who he was concerned that he may be injured.

The witness called Shomrim who in turn alerted the police and began searching for the mugger, but Shomrim were unable to locate him.

Hatzalah was also called to check out the victim, who suffered an abrasion to his leg and complained of headaches. He was treated at the scene, and BH did not sustain any serious injuries.

When police arrived on scene they took the child and his mother for a search, then back to the precinct to look at photos of known criminals, and to make a police report.

    Where do we live? Mugging a 10 year old??
    So much for the cops being around to help, instead of taking care of the quotas and harassing people..

    Schools must start teaching kids self defense.
    We gotta teach criminals that our community is not the place.

    We need some servailence camras. Every Home should have one.
    1 of every 4 black males have a criminal record. We are not suposed to depend on miricles. Police are too buisy trying to arest people blocking the side walk or giving tickets.

    Basic equipment for a jewish kid should include Mase, cellphone and good sneekers. Also If a black male asks “what time it is” – its time to run and yell.

    Our kids must be taught never to talk to strangers. Even if they seem polite. Better to be rude to a nice stranger than to become a victim, ch“v.

    Also, kids should know that if a stranger does approach, they should run away quickly (safely, not into traffic) and scream ”Help! Help! Help!” as loudly as they can until they are safely out of the way.

    I saw someone on crown and kingston circling with a bike yesterday at 9 pm. something told me this guy is not up to anything good. I quickly returned to my house. Later there was an incident on crown and brooklyn, can this be related?

    most of these people are from the rotten system which never paid attention to kids who were not being raised responsibly, and now we are all paying for them to hang out in our streets.
    They mostly come from a long line of unfortunates and the system doesnt help them and doesnt help us.

    i exercise caution all the time
    not paranoid of course!
    if i am walking on the side walk, and the street is pretty deserted,
    and there a group of blacks coming toward me
    i cross the street

    if it is one black
    i make there is a good distance bn him and i
    and am very aware of his stance
    plus i make sure to have a purposefulness to my stance
    (they prey on the vulnerable)

    having pepper spray or the like would be very helpful
    i should buy it myself
    while you are walking by
    have your hand on it in your pocket
    ready to use
    (unfortunately there is no choice, is there, we have to do something proactive!)

    also,
    kids need to be trained not to talk to blacks
    actually no one really should
    especially questions that are not important
    it is a distraction – we must get that!

    ok, it’s very simple: What needs to happen is a extremely tough new law be passed against this type of offense. Would you think of mugging anyone if you knew you’d get a $50,000 fine (I’m serious) and five years of community service, no exceptions, no mercy? Muggers mug for one reason nowadays: They know they can get away with it. Make crime not pay, the crime goes away.

    fourteen years ago i was run over by a bike and one of my neighbors swore that it was his bike that the american of African descent rode. even a couple years later he enjoyed reminding me that it was his bike.

    Maybe its time for parents to be responsible for their kids. What is a 10 year old doing in the dark walking around ch on his own. NO ch is not as safe as you think and in most normal places we dont have little kids walking alone in the streets at all never mind when its dark!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

    ps the mugger must be an amateur, does he think a ten year old has a wallet with a stash of cash? or did he want the kid’s homework that badly?

    Anyone out there willing to taking responsibility for the fact that a ten year old has no business walking alone in an inner city neighborhood where occurrences like this are known to be common place. Quick blaming the black people. Blame the parents for not protecting their kid.

    What the Shomrim will do? or the police will do? If is the time that the bachurim came home, have some parents outside watching. Neighbhorhood patrol by own neighbhords so this stuff don’t happen again. Today a woman was robbed her cellphone at a near by place too.
    I hope we can do something together before gets out of hand.
    HaShem is with us so we have to do our job: Patrol the streets.
    Did anyone noticed that lightly there is no police in the street on Shabbos at all, not 1 policeman…Did anyone say anything to the Police Station, the Commisioner, The Brought President, the City Council or…we gone a behive as always?

    To number 22 and 24 what is wrong with you. I happen to know the family really well and there is nothing wrong with a 10 year old walking home from school when he only has to cross one st. And someone was waiting outside with him and it was in broad daylight.. And how can u say it is not the blacks fault and it is the parents?? I hope that this never happens to ur kids!!!

    to #10, self defense teaches you to be alert as well which could have helped, and just because in this case it wasn’t a fair fight it doesn’t change the fact that if self defense was part of jewish schools curriculum it would definitely help over all mugging

    Has anybody considered that the man is mentally ill?

    Teaching racism to youth and promoting it will not solve anything but make things worse. Plain and simple, it’s spreading ignorance.

    Children should be taught not to talk to strangers and they should not walk home alone, that’s all.

    this is the 3rd time this week!
    how can we take matters into our hands
    we need what we had years ago
    volunteers to patrol our streets (heavily)

    New technology for wireless Cameras are avaailable. I just purchased one on Amazon for $170.00. Every block in Crown Heights can have several cameras!

    Also we can n0t depend on the police. Our children and adults must know how to stay alert and if need be defend themsevles!

  • Why can-t we get better quality police?

    Other parts of Brooklyn seem to have a better quality of police. Just the fact that everyone now knows to call Shomrim first says alot about the level of confidence we have in the integrity of the police.

    These comments are very true in that everyone in CH need to protect themselves. As an African American woman that has lived in CH for all of my life, I take offense to many of the comments. Believe it or not there are very intelligent, respectable, and caring African American people , (Black, Negro, NIGGA), whatever you choose to call us living in CH.
    It’s unfortunate that all “blacks” are grouped together as “SEMI ANIMALS”.
