New Wave of Airbag Thefts, Police Commissioner Unhappy
CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Over 3 cars were broken into Tuesday night and had their windows broken and airbags stolen. The types of cars targeted in this wave were primarily late model Toyota Camerys.
In the past Nissan Maximas, Ford Fusions and a variety of other models have been targeted as well.
The New York Daily News reported this morning that police commissioner Raymond Kelly is unhappy with the rise in auto theft and burglary, and has ordered a renewed focus on curbing such crimes.
Aron Hershkop of Everything Automotive, a local mechanic, recommended that car owners use a steering wheel guard or club in order to discourage such thefts, as well as parking in well lighted areas.
Theft of a single airbag can run a vehicle owner over $1000 to replace, and with insurance deductibles it always ends up costing the owner. A Shomrim spokesperson asked that residents keep their eyes open and report all crime.
