A confrontation between a black woman and a Lubavitcher girl on a subway ended with the theft of a cell phone, and a later attempt to retrieve it yielded a ransom request by the woman from the earlier confrontation. The victim thought of calling Shomrim, but didn’t at first thinking that it wouldn’t be right to trouble them with such a trivial matter, but later called and together they retrieved the phone. The following letter was sent to us by the victim:
To the Shomrim of Crown Heights:

I am writing this letter to express my thanks for what Shomrim did for me this week.

My phone was stolen, and I soon had given up hope on ever retrieving it. That was only until I decided to call Shomrim of course.

I am writing this letter to express my thanks for what Shomrim did for me this week.

My phone was stolen, and I soon had given up hope on ever retrieving it. That was only until I decided to call Shomrim of course.

I contacted Shomrim and within 10 minutes we were in the car on our way to set things right. And boy, were things set right. I received my phone back, as well as the money I was blackmailed with.

That day which started out as stressful and frustrating, ended with only smiling faces.

Why? Because of Shomrim. Because Shomrim showed that they cared. That even a small loss of another, like losing a cell phone was regarded as important.

I thank you for that, and for all that you do for this community, and hope that you will continue in your great work of helping Yidden and keeping our community safe.

With much thanks,
M. K.

Shomrim confirmed the story which ended with the arrest of the woman for petit larceny and blackmail, and thanked the officers of the 73rd precinct, where the retrieval of the phone took place, for their professionalism and their zeal in getting a criminal off the streets, “we can only wish that officers in the 71st [precinct] would be allowed to do the same” said Gadi Hershkop, a Shomrim coordinator.

A Lesson for the New Year

If we can all take another’s small problem seriously as our important concern then we will have great merit in Crown Heights!

May it be a year of Moschiach Mamosh!

Yeah openly criticizing the police is a GREAT idea!
I understand ur frustration but there are diplomatic ways of doing….

    – ah forget it, you Lubavitchers are just clueless

  • TO UNGEFURENEH.....

Dont come on to our websites and into our community and start sticking up for the police and putting us down. what will you say if g-d forbid something happens to you or someone related to you and nothing is done. we have to deal with the anti-Semite 71st precinct.
so next time think before you say/write something.
    STICK UP or SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!!

I have dealt with the 71st on several occasions. I don’t find them to be anti-Semitic. I find them to be lazy and self serving. They often destroy or fail to write up crime reports, and fail to follow up on incidents, because it eliminates work for them and makes the crime rate in the community look better. They are always stating that crime is down in the 71’st. REPORTED crime is down, because year after year they succeed in destroying or discouraging more written reports than in the year before. One can only guess that the history of multiple “accidents” of “lost” reports, and the zealousness with which the officers on the scene try to talk the victim out of filing a formal report, results not from random oversights, but from a planned scheme to make less work and a better written “record” of recorded crimes in the 71’st.

It is more than a coincidence that the major crimes in this precinct are solved by special units brought in from outside the precinct, usually within hours of being assigned to the “outsiders”.

    Look at the photo again.
The day was so cold that the officer on the right was wearing a balaclava.

the picture has no actual connection to the article. It is just a random picture of shomrim doing thier buisness and the author attached it to this article
