  Shomrim is great and people should call them whenever there is a crime, etc. But 911 should also be called. It is important when calling to be as calm as possible, give an exact location, description, and listen to the person at the other end of the phone. Shomrim may respond faster than the NYPD, but the NYPD has the power and the potential to catch a perp better than citizen patrols, who are not authorized as "peace officers" with any special authority.

  i must say, i congradulate the NYPD on their very smart move: they come in huge force over yom tov so we all think there always there when we need them but then 3am on kingston and president theres nobody!!

  B”H Motzei Yom Tov my wife and I were cleaning up from Pesach, when at exactly 12:49 a.m. 2 shots rang out from a large calibre weapon near the corner of President and Schentady. I looked out the front window and saww 6 black males run away from the corner 5 into 1623 President St. ( a Fisher Bldg.)I immediateky called the 71st Pct. directly. It took the Police TEN MINUTES to send a squad car there ! I called th C.H.J.C.C., Batya Brandel and have not yet received the courtesy of a return phone call. I called the Commander of the 71st. Pct., Commander Vega and have not yet received the courtesy of a return phone call. Is that not lovely?

  its nice to call shomrim and 911 but by the time we call and they get there its 2 late they never catch the guys

  we need a group of 100 guys bochurm kollel guys

  and 10 guys per night to sit in parked cars for hours and watch

  some bocurim should walk up and down and when a guy tries to start up with him we will all be there the guy in the undercover car will call everyone else and we will beat the crap out of the guy

  this is unbelivabul i spoke to a cop and he told me that thay were goingto put cameros up all over ch.

  and that is besides the point i was muged on pasach and nobady was thre to help me so i faght (by) for my self and he ran away and we could not find him thats besides the point which tahy never find the person who

  motzai yomtov we heard shots outside our building (union and schenectady) at like 12 s/t a.m. there was a huge fight going on. pple screaming and running. we called cops and 3 cruisers drive by within the next few minutes. i’m glad they responded, but i doubt they caught anyone. they were all gone right away. i walk home alone at that hour all the time. i dont understand why there arent cruisers just patrolling the streets. who is in charge of arranging that?

I have a friend in the CH Shomrim and from what I see from him, I think that the CH Shomrim has the ability to protect the community. I believe that the Shomrim are the modern day Maccabis and its time to show the world that we Jews are tough and we will not stand for any form of anti semitism!

  I am going to say something controversial and I am sure people will react to this but : WHY ARE PEOPLE WALKING THE STREET AT 3:20 AM?? Why do people feel that they can walk the streets at any time of the night and it’s perfectly safe. I am not G-d forbid saying that the mugging deserves to have happened, but why do people feel the need to stroll around after midnight? And I am sure everyone disagrees with me, but night time is for sleeping and the evening for staying at home and resting – the CH attitude that the day starts at 9:00 pm is half the problem. And now, let the responses begin…….

  I was on the shuttle bus today. Two african american girls were throwing nuts at me. I asked them to stop and they continueslesly thru without even being embarrassed. They threw handfuls of broken shells, im not exagerating….i should have gone to the driver, but i didnt want to make a commotion…its discusting….i yelled at them, they have to realize that we wont just take it like a wimp…you gotta be nice, and then scare them by opening your mouth, its probably not the greatest thing but what choice do you have when there isn’t anyone there?

  All this is getting really ugly, i would suggest the next time the mugger is caught, make sure he gets a beating. not just stam a beating, rather to the extent that he will never even consider doing anything of the sort in the future. dont wait until the cops come to take care of it, it’s about time we start taking things into our own hands. Guys please i beg of you to catch these criminals for the only way these guys understand is a hand for a hand etc. dont let them get away we got to do whatever it takes, if it means breaking a few bones then so be it but at least it will get the message across. I’m greatly sorry to those that feel this way is to extreme but to tell u the truth it i’m starting to get sick hearing all these acts of terrorism in our own community and all we do is just sit and wait until it hits the head lines once again.

  Reality Check is spot on.

  In neighborhoods where people work and pay taxes, the only ones out at that hour are the troublemakers and maybe night students…just as bad as the "other" people’s kids hanging out on the stoops and corners at all hours of the night.

  In case nobody happens to notice, muggings and robberies happen in ALL areas of the city. CH actually receives a disproportionately high amount of city services in relation to tax ratables simply because of the tax-exempted properties. The cops are not the problem. The problem is the failure of the people of the community to COOPERATE with law enforcement and be even-handed and report on everyone the same way, whether you witness a common street mugging, an arson torching, or a murder.

  All they want to do is forment machlokes in the community.

  Give the masses free meals and they will be quiet.

  Why doesnn’t any one see the obvious?

  If the Vaad Hakohol compliments the police at a murder funeral what more can you expect? The police know the leadership is only intersted in their own agendas, not the community. Therefore they do what they want.

  So we do not have the right to walk in our neighborhood late at night anymore? Sorry, but there is no excuse for what happened. Sometimes people need to be out late at night for any one of a number of legitimate reasons, and we have the RIGHT to safe streets 24/7.

  So what? Why should we not have the right to be free citizens? Why should you and I not have the freedom to do whatever we want – are we breaking a law or doing something wrong by walking around in our own community?

  Do we live under some type of curfew like Nazi Germany?

  – I think it is not fair to mix peoples schedules in to the issue, even if the schedules are not healthy ones (i.e. starting at 9 pm etc…)

  It should not change that it is the City’s job to take up the challenge of N.Y. being the metropolis that it is. Not to mention that it is directly rewarding the gangsters to let them loose at night without a fight, that way of life is why we live in America and not Ukraine or some 3rd world jungle where the strongest fends for himself.

  In short, we should be able to walk around with safe streets 24/7! (Even at 3am alone)

  You do NOT live in Nazi Germany-its been gone for sixty years now-but you do live in a city whose people-ALL of the people-are facing challenges in terms of sporadic crime waves and inconsistencies in law enforcement (that do go both ways, BTW, so remember that).

  So HELP the police!

  ASSIST them rather then whining about being discriminated against. This is happening in ALL communities-nobody’s buying that you are being ignored any worse than anyone else! Be respectful-obey the laws of this country, and STOP trying to take the law into your own hands-it is foolish, and undesirable. Frankly, you are not ABLE to take on these lower-echelon thug types without making fools of yourselves trying-and this is what the police are paid for.

  Remember, your rule of law stops at your doorstep, and not one step further. That’s why we have people paid out of our tax dollars to serve and protect us.

  For G-d’s sake, stop talking about breaking bones in regards to every stupid punk mugger. It doesn’t become you people, not at all. Be within, stay above.

  Sometimes, people have to or want to take a walk at odd hours. Such a walk is not a criminal act or immoral in any way. An assault on a law abiding citizen is immoral and illegal, and the lack of police protection when it is most needed (many of the employed, decent African and Caribbean Americans in CH probably work the night shift from time to time as many of the women in those communities work in health care) is completely unacceptable.

  And since pepper spray is legal, it is probably a good idea for those who have to be out at night to carry same.
