CROWN HEIGHTS [NY1] — Charges are pending against a Brooklyn man shot by police yesterday during an altercation at a Crown Heights subway station.

Police say Stephen McKenzie, 32, became argumentative after asking plainclothes officers for a cigarette yesterday at the Utica Avenue station.

Investigators say after police identified themselves, McKenzie took out a screwdriver and attacked them. One officer was stabbed in the shoulder and the left thigh.

Police say the man attempted to stab the other officer in the chest, but the screwdriver did not penetrate the officer’s bullet-proof vest.

McKenzie was shot in the hip and the chest. A 16-year-old bystander was grazed in the calf.
