CROWN HEIGHTS — Plain-clothes cops shot a psycho panhandler on Brooklyn subway platform this afternoon after he asked an officer for a cigarette and then inexplicably tried to stab him in the chest with a screwdriver, police sources said.

The bloody and bizarre incident began at 3:44 p.m. on the 3/4-train platform at the Utica Avenue station in Crown Heights, when the suspect approached a pair of undercover cops and asked to bum a smoke from one of them.

The NYPD officer – who was on patrol in the subway – responded by flashing his badge. Moments later, the crazed smoker pulled out the hand tool and tried to plunge it into the cop’s chest near his shoulder.

The officer was only saved from being impaled thanks to his bullet-proof vest, police sources said.

Exactly what happened next is unclear, but the two officers struggled with the man and then both of them pulled their guns and opened fire, the sources said.

The tool-wielding madman was hit in the fusillade, as was a bystander who was grazed in the leg.

The officer, the suspect and the bystander were all hospitalized, but none of their injuries appear to be life threatening, police said.

    BROOKLYN (WABC) — Subway delays are being reported after a double shooting inside the Utica train station in Brookyn.

    According to police, officers confronted a suspect in the Utica Avenue subway station for uknown reasons.

    The suspect then stabed the officer in the shoulder with a screwdriver. That is when shots were fired and the suspect was hit.

    There is no information from police on the identity of the second person.

    oh my gosh I was on eastern parkway just when that happened I was on my bike and I couldn’t get through because everyone was coming out of the train station and i wa swondering why

    Hasn’t anybody thought about all the crazy panhandlers accosting us on Kingston? Sure, some have been around for years, but we have some who are new. And let’s not forget everyone who bangs on our doors 5 times a week asking for $$, a drink, food, even medication. Some are legit, some are not.

    We don’t have bullet proof vests if these nuts start up with us.
    The cops were 100% right.

    That’s exactly why they need to practice! that way when it comes to a situation where they need to shoot they know what to do and have the ability to actually do it.

    WOW! My sister was on the train, and they were stopped for forever, b/c “the Utica Avenue train station is not in service. Please be patient” or whatever. Then, while I waws going to the Pool at Ohelei Torah, at Eastern PKWY and Troy, there were bajillions of non-jewish people walking toward that section or crown heights, It was crazy!
