CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A Pennsylvania resident received a rude “Brooklyn welcome” when a group of hooligans stole his moped while visiting the borough. The incident began when two members of Shomrim, who were patrolling on Motzai Shabbos, spotted a group of about 20 to 30 Black teens walking down Union Street from New York Avenue to Brooklyn Avenue.

While the two members – Gadi Hershkop and Shloime Klein, both Shomrim veterans with many years of experience – were keeping an eye on the group, the Shomrim hotline received two phone calls from residents who were concerned that the group of teens was up to no good. This did indeed turn out to be the case.

The two members spotted the group carrying a moped between them. It was easily noticeable that they had stolen the bike, since it was impossible to push the bike due to an anti-theft lock. As the Shomrim members pulled up alongside them, the group became scared and called out to the members, “What? We aren’t allowed to carry our own bike?” They quickly dropped the moped, fleeing in different directions.

Shomrim called police and informed them that they had recovered the stolen moped and that police should take possession of it. The officers who responded went the extra mile and together located the owner and returned the bike to him.

The owner, who was visiting Brooklyn at the time, used the moped to shuttle between his wife’s sister’s house and the hospital where his wife was on bed rest prior to their baby’s birth. The owner, a non-Jew, thanked the Shomrim members and police profusely; even hugging one of them. It was a huge Kiddush Hashem.

Crown Heights residents appreciate the speedy and thorough involvement of the NYPD in the neighborhood as was displayed in this scenario.
