The original call for the Nelson sighting was in the alleyway immediately parallel to Montgomery and Crown, between Kingston and Albany, soon turning over to the back porches and backyards of homes on Montgomery Street between Albany and Troy Avenues where the suspected attempted to gain entry to a number homes.

A number of residents had called the Shomrim hotline, for they had seen Shomrim members and vehicles all around the block, in order to update them with sightings of the suspect, culminating in Shomrim apprehending him in an alleyway two blocks away.

Police arrived at the scene within seconds of Shomrim stopping the individual and arrested the suspect, who turned out not to be Nelson, and charged him with attempted burglary and trespassing.

One of the ranking police officers on scene thanked the Shomrim members for their assistance in preventing what could have been a very serious crime with more horrific consequences.

Kudos to Shomrim, I gotta say this. I got to see how these guys operate first hand, zipping around in those little police buggys and blearing radios, I must say that in that caose of all those cop cars and all those Shomrim members I had little confidence in any of them. Reading this story set me straight.

There is means behind the chaos and what I got to see was a group of volunteers, young ones I might add, that have discipline and order, proof from the fact that they all had a mission, one was knocking on a door of a house and went in, while another came running in after him not even 2 seconds later, they all came running out after I heard on their radios that they saw him jump a fence on to troy and a car with sirens blaring went flying in that direction.

A few minutes later I saw two Shomrims coming back to the block to retrieve their cars, which they abandoned to pursue the guy on foot, and they let us know that they got the guy.

Wow, how lucky we are to have a group of such selfless and devoted people that even with Shabbos less then 10 minutes away they still took the time to help out our block.

Thank You Shomrim. A Gut Voch.

Maybe I missed it but, was it Nelson they got? or someone else? they said a sighting but didn’t actually say it was him.

    To Ummmmm:

It is understood from the article that is was not Nelson who was apprehended. I quote: Shomrim “consequently encountered a much more serious call just across the street.”

“to retrieve their cars, which they abandoned to pursue the guy on foot”

I’m shocked they didn’t get tickets.

    Great job!
