Police: Torah stolen from car in Crown Heights

CROWN HEIGHTS [NEWS12] — Police say a Torah was stolen from inside a car parked on Union Street Monday evening.

According to authorities, the Sefer Torah was being transported to a Brooklyn Heights synagogue, but was left in a car while the driver went inside his Crown Heights apartment. The driver and his family returned to the car to find the window shattered and the holy Jewish text missing.

Neighbors say there have been frequent car robberies in their area of late. The family transporting the Torah says the holy text is worth at least $45,000.

Most Sefer Torahs cost thousands of dollars because each one is handwritten on natural materials and takes at least a year to make. Some Torahs can cost upward of $80,000.

It was a stupid thing & some wacko definitely did not know what he was talking about. Could it be that this was a set up???? A shvartza would have been seen even if he was smart enough! It would not surprise me if it is a yid & echad ma Anash who stole it Either Revenge or The money.

shame on you…how could you say that anash…if you were a true part of anash you would never say such a thing…whatever happened to dan l’kaf z’chus…shame, this poor guy is devistated about a missing SEFER TORAH and you’re busy putting him down…be quiet…and try to say something nice next time;-)

Its true that a stolen Torah would appear as a targeted assult by a profesional theif, I still think that this was actually another window-break in by the same street thug at the same union street with a long history. Just this time he hit gold. We’re talking about Union Street, and anyone who’s ever parked a car at that end of town knows by now all the local auto glass repair shops.

What is a sefer Torah doing in the back of a car? For those of us who sit around and do nothing here in CH it may sound a bit strange, but for the many bochrim and local shluchim who are busy with mivtzoim, transporting a sefer torah for a minyan etc is nothing new.

I wouldn’t leave my Tephilin in the car, let alone a Torah Scroll!! G-d willing it will be recovered soon!
