All the Mezuzahs Stolen off Apartment Doors
CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Last night, Wednesday, Mezuzahs were stolen off front doors of Jewish residents in a mostly non-Jewish building. The building, 576 Eastern Parkway is a massive building which spans all the way across to Union Street and has 48 residential units out of which just 3 are occupied by Jews.
More in the Extended Article.
One of the residents left her house in the morning and remembered kissing the Mezuzah on her way out, but when she came back in the afternoon all that was left was the strip of glue which held the Mezuzah in place.
After checking in with the other residents she found that they had their Mezuzahs also stolen. Unsure what to do she called her brother and asked gim what to do, who responded that she should call the police, which she did.
Upon arriving on scene Police immediately classified the theft of the Mezuzahs as a bias crime, and ordered the Crime Scene Unit to come and ‘dust’ the door for fingerprints. Detectives and police brass also responded and interviewed the victims and other tenants.
One of the residents had called up the building management and asked that they consider putting up surveillance cameras in the building, but they said that they can’t, and that they have ‘more problematic’ buildings they need to attend to first.
The building directly across the street, which is also owned by Jews, had serious problems with gun shots and drugs and they opted to install cameras in the hallways and by the entrance, and the problems stopped.
One of the ranking police officers said that in all his years on the force he had never encountered such an incident. Yet Crown Heights is no stranger to bias crime, and specifically bias crime relating to Mezuzahs, in February of 2007 a Mezuzah was set on fire in a building on Crown Street, as we reported Here.

I do not know if this incident is related but,I live in a jewish condo building in Crown Heights and the mezuza was stolen from my door last Friday night. The same happened to my neighbor across the hall. In addition, the Mezuza was stolen earlier this week from the front door of our building. As these Mezuzas are Alter Rebbi’s ksav, and are expensive, I assume that someone is stealing them and then selling them to a “Socher” who then sells them back to other Lubavitchers. The community needs to figure out a way to put a stop to this
MENDY WHITMAN
CATCH THEM BEFORE THEY DO IT AGAIN

you want to stop this hire a handyman to screw down the mezuzos. They steel them for fun & to intimidate us. If I remember corect there is a ban on buying used tefilin, mezuzos, & Torahs.
